There’s nothing like planning a surprise for a loved one and being able to witness their over-the-moon reaction, reminding you of how fulfilling it is to give back to someone who’s made a difference in your life. In the latest episode of HGTV’s “Celebrity IOU,” Gwyneth Paltrow tapped the Property Brothers to transform her assistant and longtime friend Kevin’s first purchased home into the oasis that he deserved — and say thank you for all that he’s done for her.

After being her assistant for eleven years, Paltrow decided to renovate his new home while he was away for four weeks. The townhouse came with some pros — like the high ceilings and large windows that let natural light in — but the spaces were dated and tight due to an awkward layout. So Drew and Jonathan Scott stepped in to help Kevin’s home go from blah to lively and, most importantly, become a reflection of him.

Paltrow has a design background and knew an extensive amount about Kevin’s style, so she told the Property Brothers all they needed to know. Kevin was a big fan of Spanish, Mediterranean-styled design, which aligned with the home’s architectural bones. So when it came to the living room, they decided to update the fireplace with a broader shape and plaster to add more of that Mediterranean flair.

To bring in more brightness, the Scotts took out the bamboo floors and installed light-toned engineered hardwood, which paired nicely with the white walls. Speaking of white, they leaned into creating an almost all-white living room (as Paltrow mentioned that Kevin loved a clean look) — from the large sofa to the marble dining table. And as a bonus feature, they removed the back closet and carved out an arched dry bar in its place.

They added a second arch for the entrance of the kitchen, which created a flow between the spaces while keeping the infrastructure wall in tact. What used to be a tiny, cramped kitchen was transformed into a design-forward, spacious room, partly thanks to the bathroom they were able to remove and use to expand the already existing space.

Paltrow and the Property Brothers installed white lower cabinets with black quartz countertops as well as black upper cabinets, all of which matched perfectly with the black and white geometric flooring that served as a statement moment in the room. And all of the additional storage now at Kevin’s fingertips… just look at that left wall!

All in all, the trio was able to bring Kevin’s new home up to date while highlighting his love for Spanish style (and a classic all-white design). To see the rest of the renovation and the grand reveal, check out the episode on HGTV and Discovery+.

Celebrity IOU airs Mondays at 9/8 central on HGTV.
