In my dream world, I’d have a fully custom closet system filled with shelves and drawers for boutique-worthy storage. But alas, my reality is way less glamorous — I rent a small city apartment with a closet that’s bursting at the seams. Installing a costly storage system isn’t a feasible option, and neither is the handiwork that most of them require (unless I want to kiss my security deposit goodbye), which is why I headed to Home Depot to look for renter-friendly alternatives.

The home improvement store has a huge selection of permanent closet systems that require professional installation, but it also carries plenty of renter- and small-space-friendly storage finds you can use to DIY a closet system of your own, for way less cash.
