I Put a $12 IKEA Spice Rack on My Entryway Wall Because She Did (It’s So Clever!)

My entryway is small but mighty, thanks to my front door leading directly into the kitchen. I have a shoe rack that organizes my countless pairs of shoes, and a blank wall above that’s just dead space. I’ve wanted to make my entryway more efficient, but I wasn’t sure how to do it with such little surface area available.

Luckily, I came across the most ingenious small entryway idea using one of the best IKEA kitchen organizers under $20 — a spice rack — and I can’t believe how much storage it adds.

Christina Dennis, founder of Cozy DIY Home, posted a video showing how she screws together two $11.99 IKEA BEKVÄM spice racks to create one large shelf, then installs an IKEA HULTARP rail underneath it to make the perfect entryway catch-all spot. It’s a smart, affordable way to create storage space in a snap, and I was inspired to try it the moment I watched Dennis’ video. 

I ordered the items and got to work (although I decided to skip the railing underneath). Putting the spice racks together was a breeze; it required minimal elbow grease and took only about 15 minutes to build both spice racks (which are each about 15 3/4 inches long and 3 7/8 inches deep). I didn’t screw them together; instead I left them separate, just in case I needed some wiggle room in the tight wall space. I also hung them with a few nails instead of screwing them into the wall — and even with those adjustments, the racks fit the space perfectly. Now instead of an empty space on the wall, I have a new area to store all of my dog Ryker’s goodies. And I freed up some much-needed space in my kitchen cabinets. Talk about a win-win!

This IKEA BEKVÄM spice rack entryway hack is a great addition to any home. The solid aspen wood brings a warm, clean look to the area, but it’s versatile enough to accent any style. Plus, hanging it on an empty entryway wall creates storage out of thin air, where I can store items I want easily accessible that are otherwise taking up valuable space — especially in a small apartment.

Seriously, I’m so impressed with this tip that I’m ordering at least two more of the best-selling racks to hang on my kitchen walls — or maybe I’ll use the spice rack to organize my bathroom next. The sky’s (or, technically, the wall’s) the limit!
