As far as budget-friendly style goes, there’s no denying IKEA’s range. From first apartments to established homes, this Swedish retailer’s catalog can fit into nearly every scenario imaginable. Its versatility, thankfully, also extends to the holiday season.

Designer Drew Michael Scott of Lone Fox has relied on IKEA through the years as a source for basic essentials he can transform into unique pieces, and he also swings by when he’s seeking out cheerful holiday decor. While you can’t hop in the car and head there with him, you can get the next best thing: his shopping list.

I asked Scott what holiday decor he would buy with $50 — and most of what he chose is currently on sale! Here are his picks, and why you should consider them if you’re cruising the IKEA aisles for festive finds before the new year.

Creating a warm and cozy ambiance is part of the holiday magic, and for that Scott would rely on a little help from this four-holder display. “I love the shape of this candleholder and its red pop of color,” he says. “It’s so chic and under $15!” You could tuck it behind a garland on a console or mantel — right beside stocking holders and an Advent calendar.

This dynamic, light-up star can be one of many in a constellation for a whimsical holiday scene, which is why Scott would probably buy more than one. “There are so many different shapes and sizes available,” he says. “I picture them hanging over a big window.” You could also go a step further and spray-paint your selection to fit your design — painting a few gold would look so beautiful.

Staying warm while looking stylish is quite the two-for-one deal, and that’s why Scott can’t resist this throw blanket. “Adding a holiday-inspired throw blanket always helps to tie the room together,” he says. Drape it on the back of a sofa or throw it across the arm of a side chair for easy access and inviting texture.

Trim your tree with colorful playfulness by hanging this set of three glass ornaments. “These animals are so cute,” Scott says. “I’ve been into a more woodsy-inspired vibe this year.” These whimsical ornaments are small enough to fit on most trees, and you can reuse them for years to come.
