Estate sales, yard sales, and antique shops were regular weekend destinations for my brother and me as kids. My parents, always on the hunt for period-appropriate decor for our Staten Island 19th-century house, made sure of it. Since then, I’ve had a love for home design and…read more

Although I moved into my small apartment nearly two years ago, there are still a few spots that we haven’t figured out the best use for — and they have become magnets for clutter. The most noticeable one is a kitchen corner that began simply with a storage container and a step stool, but rapidly devolved into a “chaos corner.”

Looking at the daily accumulation of toys, tote bags, and vacuum attachments, I knew a better solution was possible (and very necessary). That solution arrived in the form of the IKEA EKENABBEN open shelf unit. This $49 find features three shelves and a little bit of under-unit space, providing significant storage that has finally made my kitchen feel organized.

What Is the IKEA EKENABBEN Open Shelf Unit?

Constructed from untreated wood with metal shelving, the IKEA EKENABBEN is a versatile open storage solution. This unit stands 33.88 inches tall, 27.5 inches wide, and 13.38 inches deep. It is available with white or blue shelves — each capable of supporting up to 44 pounds. Additionally, a five-shelf version is offered for an extra $20.

Why I Love the EKENABBEN Open Shelf Unit

As a dedicated IKEA enthusiast, I’m frequently browsing their site for fresh storage solutions. The moment I discovered the EKENABBEN, I grabbed my measuring tape; it was the ideal size for a tight corner in my kitchen and slim enough to remain unobtrusive.

The setup was a breeze; it took only about 15 minutes. While I did consult the directions briefly, the symmetry of the design made the second half of the assembly very intuitive. I’m particularly fond of the blue metal shelves — not only do they look great, but they also double as a spot for my kids to play with magnets. Its sleek, understated style is perfect for my kitchen, although I could easily imagine it working well in a bathroom or living area, too. Given the EKENABBEN’s sub-$50 price point, I’m seriously considering picking up a few more for those other rooms. It’s a storage must-have!
