One of IKEA’s bestselling items is the MOSSLANDA picture ledge because it’s just so versatile. It can be used as intended for displaying framed artwork, records, and trinkets, but it can also be used upside-down for narrow shelving, alongside other ledges to create a custom built-in shelving unit, or endlessly customized to add a bit of flair and storage space to any room.

There’s good news for IKEA hackers everywhere, because the Swedish home goods store just released a brand-new picture ledge that’s even more affordable than the MOSSLANDA. It’s called the NORDHÄGG, and each ledge is just $5 each.

What Is the IKEA NORDHÄGG?

The NORDHÄGG picture ledge is nearly identical to the MOSSLANDA, except this version is cheaper ($4.99 instead of $9.99, so half the price!) because it’s made out of unfinished pine and has exposed screwholes. This means it can be painted, stained, or left as is to better fit your space.

Why I Love It

The ledge also features that same iconic slot in the center of the bottom piece so you can easily layer your artwork to your liking. It’s currently available in a 17 3/4-inch length, and each one can hold up to six pounds — reviewers appreciated its sturdiness. “Good workmanship and low price, what more could you want? The strips can be converted into a spice rack,” wrote Annika, a shopper from Germany, on IKEA’s website.

However, if you’re looking for something a bit longer, Target has a similar picture ledge that looks like pine but is made out of a durable plastic material instead. This version is 30 inches long and four inches deep, so you can use it for larger trinkets and plants. You should note that this ledge doesn’t have the lip on the outer edge to keep resting frames in place, so treat it like a normal shelf.

Your MOSSLANDA DIY projects just got a bit more affordable, thanks to IKEA’s new NORDHÄGG ledge. What picture ledge projects will you dream up next?
