This ’50s-Inspired IKEA Armchair Is a Refreshing Take on This Surprising 2024 Trend
It might have been a couple of months since IKEA’s Nytillverkad collection got its latest update, but that doesn’t mean people are done talking about it! Launched for the Swedish furniture giant’s 80th anniversary last year, the collection is colorful and, honestly, pretty “groovy,” which makes sense, as the brand is revamping items from its collections from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. However, a subtle piece from the collection caught my eye, and with good reason — the ORRESLÄTT armchair.
Modeled off the BUSTER armchair from 1959, the chair features a natural rattan covering on black steel legs, an interesting standout in the otherwise vibrant collection. However, that’s not the only reason it’s notable — it also leans into the papasan chair trend that’s taken 2024 by storm. While papasan chairs tend to be somewhat squishier, there’s no reason you can’t add your own soft and comfortable pillows to the ORRESLÄTT to add a little more comfort.
This isn’t the first time the BUSTER has been revamped — it was reintroduced once already in IKEA’s 75th anniversary as the GAGNET. The ORRESLÄTT and the GAGNET are more or less the same item, which makes me think they’re definitely playing off the newfound popularity of papasan chairs!
Regardless of the reasoning, the ORRESLÄTT armchair would be a great addition to your home — either as an armchair in the living room to break up more colorful decor, as a natural addition to a plant-filled sunroom, or even as extra seating in a bedroom. At just $150, it provides the best of what IKEA offers: functionality, style, and affordability. Of course, you can also pair it with some of the other colorful Nytillverkad pieces, like the BAGGBODA side table and the ÖNNESTAD armchair.
