IKEA’s Cult-Classic Storage Gem Creates a Closet in This Cramped NYC Living Room (See How!)
In small spaces, IKEA PAX wardrobe systems can add much-needed storage. But for artist Maggie Beckett, a set of these cabinets wasn’t just helpful but integral to the long-term success of her home’s functionality. A few years ago, she moved into a 320-square-foot apartment with zero (yes, you read that right) closets and a bedroom that was so small it wouldn’t even fit a side table. So, she invested in three IKEA PAX wardrobes to create storage the apartment didn’t have.
Why This 320-Square-Foot Apartment Depends on IKEA’s PAX System
However, over the years, she met her now-husband and the pair moved into her small apartment. Not only did she want to transform the home’s murals, but she needed to incorporate more storage for both of their belongings. When their storage needs changed, she added a fourth IKEA PAX wardrobe to the set.
Now, an entire living room wall is covered with a line of IKEA PAX wardrobes, but instead of feeling cramped, it feels more spacious. The doors on the cabinets hide visual clutter (Maggie stores their clothes but also entertainment items and art supplies) and look good in the space with their gold, vintage-looking hardware that she added. They actually look like built-ins now, as if they were always meant to be there.
“I also invested in IKEA PAX system wardrobes, and it was the best thing I ever did because they provide us with so much storage. We couldn’t live here without it,” Maggie explained at the time of the House Tour.
Speaking of storage, the couple customized the interior of their wardrobes. Using IKEA’s PAX planner tool, you can change the interior configuration depending on your needs. Additionally, you can add drawers (Maggie added a slim drawer for her jewelry) and purchase organizing baskets. Plus, the quiet-closing doors add a sense of luxury to the cabinet. And the flexibility of the way Maggie uses the system allows it to function more like a built-in closet, so it doesn’t feel bulky like a stand-alone piece might.
Certain IKEA products have a cult following (this living room has nine IKEA BILLY bookshelves in it), and I believe the PAX wardrobe system is at the top of the list. As Maggie said, she and her husband wouldn’t be able to function in their home without the IKEA closets. For apartments without existing storage, systems like PAX can act as a customizable closet alternative personalized to fit any of your needs and still look chic (even without exterior customizations).
