Two years ago, vintage-inspired, mushroom-shaped table lamps were everywhere. Then came the famed “donut lamp” in 2023, as part of IKEA’s widely-anticipated VARMBLIXT collab with Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis. Now, I’m officially casting my prediction for 2024’s most popular light — and it’s yet another uniquely-shaped IKEA find (that’s less than $20!). 

Say hello to IKEA’s new SOLVINDEN LED light, a cordless table lamp designed for indoor and outdoor use. What makes this the potential lighting style of 2024, you ask? Well, designers expect battery-operated lights of all varieties — including pendants and overhead lighting — to eventually be the new norm. It’s a trend I also picked up on while recently attending a design trade show in Frankfurt, Germany, which highlighted portable lighting galore.

The SOLVINDEN light has a minimalist, small-scale silhouette — just 7 and 7/8 inches tall — that can live on any tabletop or shelf… or rotate between the two. It’s perfect for diffusing a soft, cozy glow year-round, even on balconies or patios when the weather warms up. Plus, thanks to the modern, curved shape, it basically doubles as a piece of decor wherever it’s positioned. It also has a 25,000-hour lifetime expectancy once you add batteries (which are sold separately). Not bad for just $17.99!

The mini-yet-mighty fixture is a recently-launched addition to IKEA’s SOLVINDEN outdoor collection — featuring even more wireless pieces like a compact, arched green task lamp and a contemporary lantern-inspired style with a built-in handle (all of which function inside, as well). Ultimately, I’m anticipating the SOLVINDEN LED light to take off as a trending piece this year, especially since IKEA is seemingly doubling down on versatile cordless lamp designs across the board.

Grab one (or several) from your local store or online ASAP, then have fun with styling this anywhere throughout your space. And trust me — based on similar-looking styles I’ve spotted via restaurants, hotels, and other home brands, you absolutely can’t beat this under-$20 price tag.
