I don’t have access to a garden — I live in a one-bedroom apartment in a city. But that doesn’t mean I don’t dream of gardening for my small space, which is why I’m obsessed with IKEA selling the cutest small-space friendly flower pot that works just as well indoors as it does for a tiny city apartment balcony.

Why the IKEA’s VITLÖK Flower Box Is Perfect for Small Spaces

For just $14.99, IKEA’s new VITLÖK Flower Box promises to add a dose of spring energy wherever you display it in your home, thanks to its cheerful pastel blue color. Made out of sturdy rust-resistant galvanized steel, the flower box’s horizontal design — which measures 20.5 inches in length, 6.5 inches in width, and 6.75 inches in height— makes it perfect for fitting in narrow windowsills or hanging off your balcony railing while also boasting enough space for your dream mini herb garden or plant baby display. If you’re no green thumb, you can also fill them with faux flowers as well as seasonal decor to effortlessly add a themed decoration to your kitchen window or an outside space.

One of the best parts of the VITLÖK Flower Box is that it comes with a detachable holder that you can take on or off depending on your needs. If your usable outdoor space is very limited, you can hook a few of these flower boxes off the back of your balcony or patio rail without taking away from your entertaining area.

Depending on the way your outdoor balcony is set up, you can also hook these plant boxes from your roof or another high surface to artfully display trailing plants or flowers while adding some shade and privacy to your exterior oasis. If you want to make your flower or plant box more of a decor focal point, you can also display them as an outdoor tablescape or arrange several different flower and plant combinations around your balcony or deck area.

One thing to keep in mind: IKEA planters tend to not have drainage holes, so you might need to drill some yourself or use a self-watering insert to control the watering levels.

An Alternative to the IKEA VITLÖK Flower Box

Depending on where you live, you can order the VITLÖK Flower Box on IKEA’s website for delivery or for pickup at your closest location. However, if this isn’t an option for you or you just want another color, Amazon is selling a two-pack of hanging outdoor flower planters for $19.99 with a similar shape and detachable hooks.

While these plant boxes are slightly smaller than the IKEA ones — they measure about 9 inches long by 4 inches deep by 10 inches wide — they’re a good option if you want several different kinds of flower, herb, and plant displays. Available in a pastel blue, gray, and white, Amazon’s River Metal Hanging Flower Plant Pots also come with no draining holes, so you’ll still need to have a drill on hand.
