Living room detail of white sofa and black and white striped chair

When I first moved into my New York apartment and started shopping for a small-space sofa, I discovered a few brands almost immediately, like Sabai, Article, Cozey — and Koala. Once my algorithm caught wind of my search, I started seeing the Australian furniture brand’s viral sleeper sofas everywhere I scrolled. Naturally, I wondered whether all the rave reviews I was seeing online were legit.

Turns out, several Apartment Therapy editors have Koala sofas in their homes and confirmed that, yes, the sofas are 100% worth it. I investigated further to find out why.

Quick Overview

What’s So Great About Koala?

Koala makes stylish, functional sofas for spaces of any size using sustainable materials, whether you need a compact apartment sofa that effortlessly converts to a sleeper or a modular sectional you can customize as your life and layout evolve. The Aussie brand’s prices vary depending on the item and size you choose, but most range between $1,400 and $10,200 at full price.

What Is Koala?

Based in Sydney, Australia, Koala is a direct-to-consumer brand that specializes in stylish, sustainably made furniture. Whether you’re concerned about space, assembly, or environmental impact, Koala’s pieces address all of the above. The pieces are made to accommodate layouts big and small, and many feature versatile, modular silhouettes that can be reconfigured as your needs change, without any tools (!). What’s more, they’re meticulously made using sustainable materials (like FSC-certified timber and recycled, plant-derived fabrics) and durable, water-resistant upholstery.

Koala isn’t just in the name, either. The brand works with the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) on koala conservation efforts and has donated over $5.5M AUD so far! The brand is also a certified B-Corporation, which essentially ensures it meets the highest social and environmental standards, and a member of 1% For the Planet, which ensures that 1% of Koala’s annual sales go towards an environmental cause. We love an ethical business!

Does Koala Deliver?

Yes. Koala delivers to the U.S., Australia, and Japan. There are several shipping options: free standard freight delivery, which can take anywhere from seven to 21 days, and free FedEx ground shipping, which takes two to seven days — both require that you pick a delivery window at checkout. Currently, Koala only offers White Glove delivery for its larger sofa models like the Byron and the Wanda sofa, which costs $179 and has a seven- to 21-day delivery window. As part of the White Glove delivery service, Koala’s freight partners will bring your sofa into the room of your choice, set it up completely, and remove any packaging. All you need to do is get rid of your old sofa first.

Does Koala Have Stores?

No, Koala operates using a direct-to-consumer model, which helps the brand keep its prices reasonable by foregoing the added operational costs of running a storefront.

Do You Need to Assemble Koala Furniture?

Unless you’re buying the Wanda or Byron sofas and opting for White Glove delivery, you will need to assemble your Koala sofa. But hear me out: It’s actually pretty straightforward. AT editors said the process is surprisingly smooth, and goes even faster with an extra set of hands. Most importantly, though, it doesn’t require any tools, so you can leave your tool kit alone (cue the sigh of relief).

Does Koala Have Sales?

Yes they do! Koala has a few sales throughout the year, especially during major holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Labor Day, and Presidents’ Day.

Is Koala Furniture Worth It?

TLDR: Koala furniture is absolutely worth it. An AT editor wrote that the brand’s famous fold-out sleeper sofa has been a game-changer when hosting overnight guests in a small space, and another AT staffer shared that its modular models have solved some of their trickiest layout dilemmas. Functionality aside, the brand makes a wickedly stylish sofa, with clean-lined silhouettes that look modern and inviting in any living room. Best of all, the couches are truly comfortable, according to the editors who’ve tested them, which is always hard to gauge when you’re shopping online.

The Best Koala Furniture

If you’re feeling inspired to give Koala a try, I’ve rounded up the editor-approved pieces (and a few customer favorites) that are worth considering first.

Koala Sofa Bed, 4th Gen, 70" Queen
$1,990

Obviously, I had to start with the brand’s best-selling Koala Sofa Bed. It’s available in a 46-, 64-, 70-, and 81-inch widths to accommodate any space — one editor said the 70-inch queen model was the perfect fit for her studio apartment. “It’s extremely comfortable with deep seats, and the fabric is so soft,” she wrote. The seat unfolds into a sleeper in seconds, and actually stays in place when it’s in sofa form. “I thought the cushions would slide off, move, or slip away from the back of the sofa, but I quickly realized that there are heavy-duty hooks that keep the cushions in place.”

Byron Sofa Bed
$2,695

The Byron converts from sofa to sleeper a little differently — here, there’s a roll-out sleeper base that offers additional support for the fold-out sleep surface. There are sneaky hidden storage compartments in the arms to stash spare bedding in, and a deep seat that’s ready for lounging. Durable, machine-washable covers make it easy to maintain, and a system of ingeniously placed hooks keep all the cushions from slipping and sliding around when you don’t want them to. They thought of everything!

Wanda Sofa Bed
$3,295

“I really can’t think of a person that this couch isn’t good for,” wrote one editor about Koala’s Wanda Sofa Bed. It’s basically a four-in-one: It can be configured as a reversible chaise sectional, daybed, and queen-size bed, and it has a huge storage compartment hidden in the chaise. The modular design makes it easy to maneuver into a smaller apartment, but it would also be right at home in a larger living room. “We moved a month after first trying this sofa, and disassembling it was just as easy as assembling it (and putting it back together felt like muscle memory),” she adds.

Torquay Sectional Sofa
$2,900

If you want a sofa that can grow along with you, then Koala’s Torquay sectional is the way to go. “With its modular design, you can add or remove pieces as your space changes, which feels like a smart long-term investment — especially if you’re a renter, and you never quite know what your next place will look like,” wrote one AT staff member. The three-piece chaise sectional offers the plush lounge space she wanted, without taking over her small space. Plus, the machine-washable covers hold up fabulously against spills!

Tamarama Sectional Sofa
$2,400

While we haven’t tested Koala’s new Tamarama sofa just yet, let’s just say I’m making a mental note for later. It looks incredibly cozy with its plumped-up, pillowy cushions, and I love that it comes in straight and curved models to suit any layout. The HyperCloud foam cushions seem ultra-soft, and claim to keep their shape without fluffing. Not to mention, the two-piece, 75-inch-wide model looks like a great choice for small apartments.

Koala Sofa Bed, Twin XL
$1,450

If you’re extremely tight on space, the armchair version of the brand’s Koala sofa is your best bet. It flips open to a Twin XL-sized sleeper in seconds, making it a great addition to a home office or studio apartment. With its deep, wide seat and fluffy arm cushions, it looks like the ultimate place to curl up with a book!
