My husband and I are supremely lucky dog parents, in that our lovable, 9-year-old Lab mix, Jake, is fully house-trained. But I still keep a stash of cleaning products in case of other oops moments, like when our poor pup vomits when life gets a bit too exciting for him. Case in point: Last week, the mail carrier and the UPS delivery person showed up at the same time, so I was glad to have a pet spray cleaner and deodorizer at the ready.

Quick Overview

Quick Look at Lively Pet Multi-Surface Stain & Odor Remover

  • It’s fragrance-free and made of natural ingredients.
  • It has probiotic cleaning power that continues to work for up to three days.
  • It’s safe to use around adults, pets, and kids.
  • It can be used on different surfaces, like sealed floors, carpet, furniture, and bedding.

The problem is that the product I use, while effective, has a lingering floral scent that can give me a headache. So I was thrilled when I came across Lively Pet Multi-Surface Stain & Odor Remover, which won a Good Housekeeping’s Best Cleaning and Organizing Award, notably in the odor category as an “A+ Stink Stopper.” It touts fragrance-free cleaning and deodorizing power with all-natural ingredients.

What Is Lively Pet Multi-Surface Stain & Odor Remover?

Lively Pet Multi-Surface Stain & Odor Remover calls itself fragrance-free, and to my nose, it is. In fact, at first, I was convinced it was just a bottle full of water — not a far miss, as the main ingredient on the bottle is, indeed, water. It’s made of just three ingredients: water, sodium laureth sulfate, and probiotic bacteria. That last one surprised me. The only time I’ve ever heard talk of probiotics was about yogurt. So when I saw them listed as an ingredient, I thought, “Hey, if you can eat them, they must be gentle for cleaning, right?”

Here’s the scoop: Probiotics are live microorganisms, which include the “good” type of bacteria that counterattack bad bacteria (like pet messes). I like the idea of using something natural that won’t harm Jake, although it’s safe to say that whenever you’re using any type of cleaning product, keep that bottle out of your pet’s reach.

How to Use Lively Pet Multi-Surface Stain & Odor Remover

Lively is quite easy to use: Clean up most of the yucky stuff first (this depends on the mess in question), then shake the bottle and spray. Wait one to two minutes before you start blotting, and the stain and odor should be gone.

It says to spray generously, but honestly one spray of this is generous enough. I was so excited to try it out that I didn’t realize there were two different options: mist and stream. I made the mistake of using the stream first and triggered a spray so strong, it was like a water gun that soaked the couch. My bad, but I admit I did panic when I saw how much this product saturates the fabric. (My couch is fine, but I recommend doing a spot test on a concealed area first.)

I tested it on a recent drool spot on the couch where Jake likes to take his nap — I usually have it covered with a blanket or sheet, but when they’re in the wash, I let the spoiled boy sit on the uncovered couch anyway. Next, I sprayed (gently) one of Jake’s blankets. Any doggy odor quickly dissipated without being replaced by another scent, pleasant or otherwise.

My Thoughts on Lively Pet Multi-Surface Stain & Odor Remover

I’m happy to report that there was no fading on any surface and even happier to say that a slightly older stain on the couch also disappeared. The product says it’s got enough cleaning power to continue to work for up to three days. It says it’s suitable for color-fast and moisture-tolerant surfaces including sealed floors, carpet, and furniture, as well as pet crates and bedding. I especially like the deodorizing aspect of Lively and will replace the too-strong-smelling spray I’ve been using.

In the meantime, Jake doesn’t seem fazed by Lively and the fact that his blankie and favorite couch pillow smell (or, rather, don’t smell) fresher. Good boy!
