Michaels is not just your neighborhood arts and crafts store; it’s also one of Apartment Therapy editors’ favorite places to shop for cute, affordable home decor (need I remind you of the $30 runner I found there recently?). But if you’re not totally convinced, I offer up this Read the Room Cross Stitch Throw Pillow as additional evidence. It’s cheeky and charming, and looks like a much more expensive designer find — despite being only $15.

What Is the Read the Room Cross Stitch Throw Pillow?

Made by Michaels’ home decor sub-brand, Ashland, the Read the Room Throw Pillow is a highlight of the brand’s Next Chapter collection, which features a ton of bookish-themed finds. It’s a rectangular shape that measures 12x16x4.5 inches, and features a cottagecore-esque cross-stitched design with “Read the Room” on the front — equal parts sassy and charming.

It comes pre-stuffed with polyester filling, so there’s no need to buy a separate insert. And there are four other equally clever designs to choose from: Sorry I’m Booked, One More Chapter, Currently Reading, and The Book Was Better

Why We’re Into It

Between the sassy saying and the cross-stitched design, the Read the Room Throw Pillow reminds me of a cheeky designer find — except at a fraction of the price. The red border and floral details give it a stylish, handmade appearance that brings cottagecore charm (and a pop of unexpected red!) to your decor. Just imagine how cute it would look in a reading nook! I’m even considering buying one (or several) as gifts for my bookworm friends. It’s sure to bring a chuckle to anyone lucky enough to receive it.

“[It’s a] great way to refresh a space!” wrote one Michaels reviewer — and I couldn’t agree more! It’s a small home accent that adds instant personality to any sofa, accent chair, or living space. What’s more, the pillow’s compact size is great for snuggling, too. That same reviewer also said that the pillow has a firmer feel, which bodes well for how it’ll hold up over time.
