Ever had a vision of the perfect piece of art to hang on your wall, but can’t seem to find exactly what you’re looking for? Been there. That’s where Minted, the home decor and stationery hotspot, comes in: Already known for their extensive art selection, Minted just added a new tool that lets you customize select prints. It’s almost like commissioning an original piece, but for less than $100.

Minted already provides substantial sizing, framing, matting, and — in some instances — color scheme options, but their latest customizable fine art feature actually allows you to update the artwork itself. Say you see a design you love, but wish it had a different hue to match your decor, or zoomed in closer on a certain element: Now, you can make those modifications! Choose to crop, rotate, flip, or even fully recolor almost 300 eligible prints. You’ll also get paired with a Minted fine art specialist to implement your changes and send digital proofs until you’re satisfied with the end result. This process costs an additional $75 on top of the print price, but it puts you in the artist’s chair.

I got to test out Minted’s new customizable art firsthand, and the only hard part was deciding which piece to tweak. If you do have a specific look in mind, though, Minted’s site makes it easy to browse by theme, from abstract art and florals to landscapes or figures. I eventually went with the latter, re-designing the minimalist “Awaking” print. I loved the original style, featuring three female figure drawings, but I wanted to play with cropping and hone in on just two of the silhouettes.

Once I clicked “customize this print,” Minted directed me to a page where I could rotate, flip, or crop the art myself, or leave requests for the art specialist. For custom colors, you can use this space to note a specific paint tone you’d like to match, or indicate that you have photos of a room or existing art you’d like to share. Continuing with checkout, I was prompted to make frame and finish choices. I opted for the Natural Raw Wood Frame and a matted border.

Within a few days of placing my order, I heard from my art specialist, Melanie, who sent a digital proof for me to review. It was super easy to communicate changes from there: I ultimately wanted an even tighter crop, removing some extra lines, and I was able to leave a comment on the proof itself. Once Melanie updated and I approved the final proof, the print shipped immediately.

From order to arrival, the full customization process took about two weeks (and would have been faster had I not asked for additional changes). Overall, I couldn’t be happier with the efficiency and affordability of this new Minted feature, plus I love the finished product itself. You’d never be able to tell this print was a cropping of the original, and it’s still incredibly high quality, even with the close-up proportions. Including the price of the 10″ x 8″ art, frame, and finish, plus the $75 customization fee, my total came out to $148.

If you’re looking to fill a hole in your gallery wall or for a budget-friendly alternative to bespoke designs, this is one of the best ways to tailor art to your space — not to mention a super fun creative outlet, with endless design alternatives at your fingertips.
