These Designers Gave Monica Geller’s Apartment a Modern Plant-Heavy Makeover
When it comes to famous fictional homes, few are as iconic as Monica Geller’s apartment, famously located in New York City’s West Village neighborhood. Featured on all 10 seasons of “Friends,” the spacious pad has become a pop culture staple in its own right, with its purple walls and cozy decor serving up endless design inspiration for fans of the beloved sitcom nearly three decades (!) after it first debuted on NBC.
Of course, it’s always fun to imagine what Monica’s apartment would look like with some modern updates, and thankfully, there’s no shortage of creative thinkers up to the task. The pros at HouseFresh gave Monica’s apartment a biophilic design makeover, infusing nature throughout her space in unique and truly lush ways.
Biophilic design invites greenery, flora, and fauna inside the home to boost a sense of calm and serenity. There’s plenty of ways to do so, making it a fun project for HomeFresh to reimagine Monica’s famous abode with a little more of her love of nature throughout.
As a chef, it’s clear that the kitchen is a big deal for Monica, so these upgrades will definitely impress her and influence her culinary creations. Along with adding white marble countertops and darker wood-paneled cabinets to “mimic the inconstant light and shadow of nature,” the designers gave her an herb garden above the sink for inviting scents and tastes to each meal.
They also added tons of impressive features to the main living area, including large bamboo stalks near the kitchen, light hardwood floors throughout, and walls lined with greenery. The bathroom is equally peaceful, with plenty of expressive biomorphic forms and patterns (i.e. natural shapes and textures) such as a pebble-shaped tub or stone basin and a rain shower head to mimic a moment in the rainforest.
The two bedrooms also feature biophilic staples such as a rattan bed to bring a material connection with nature, while earth tones and plant canopies add natural visual appeal in more ways than one.
For a final touch, the designers added a living plant wall to the hallway outside her apartment, instantly bringing the fictional space to life. It certainly seems like Monica and Chandler would have a tough time moving away from this apartment to Westchester, and we know their pals would be happy if they changed their mind.
