Unless you’re the owner of a faux, overwatering your plant is always a possibility — and often, a high one. Many experts say it’s the number one cause of houseplant death, and there are multiple reasons that it can occur beyond being an overly generous parent (been there). But plant influencer Christopher Griffin aka PlantKween is here to let you know you’re not alone in your struggles, and that it all can come down to picking the right planter — specifically, a terracotta one.

Griffin, who just launched a plant-focused podcast on Spotify called “Green Gurls Galore,” revealed that they frequently overwater their houseplants. Knowing this about themselves, the plant influencer intentionally leans into using terracotta pots above all the other options out there as a way to decrease the chances of houseplant death via overwatering.

“Terracotta pots are great for me as a plant parent because I tend to overwater my plants, and terracotta pots are so porous and allows the soil to breath that it is a preventative method for me, that allows my plants to keep looking great,” Griffin told Apartment Therapy.

Terracotta planters are very common, largely because of the affordability and durability, but it’s a good reminder that they also have a fantastic drainage system. And with so many planter options out, especially with the uptick in houseplant popularity, Griffin’s advice to stick to the basics is worth noting.

Outside of it being a preventative method, Griffin also mentioned that they gravitate toward terracotta because of its uncomplicated design.  “I really enjoy the simplicity and letting the plants be the statement piece, so the more simple planter, the more lushness of my green girls can shine,” Griffin said.

Spoken like a true plant parent.
