There’s something magical about walking into a beautiful hotel room for the first time. The perfectly made bed, the soft lighting, the thoughtful little details that make everything feel luxurious yet inviting. It’s that instant feeling of aah, I could stay here forever. For years, I dreamed of bringing that same feeling into my own primary bedroom. But like so many homeowners, I kept finding reasons to put that makeover on the back burner. After all, when life gets busy, it’s easy to prioritize the rooms everyone else sees over the one that’s just for you.

When my husband and I bought our first home in late 2019, after years of apartment living, we decided to keep our dated bedroom furniture set to save money. Between tackling our home’s curb appeal and furnishing the spaces where we love to entertain, our bedroom kept falling to the bottom of the list. Nearly seven years later, we were still waking up in the same boring beige box. This year, I finally decided it was time to change that.

First, I Had to Break a Design Rule I’d Followed for Years

Our bedroom’s biggest problem wasn’t actually the dated furniture or boring beige walls. Those were easy fixes. It was the layout that I could never quite get right. Our relatively narrow room has a door or window interrupting every single wall, making furniture placement feel like an impossible puzzle. For years, I tried just about every furniture arrangement possible because I was determined not to put our bed in front of a window, especially one that’s narrower than the bed itself. I’ve always considered that a big design no-no. But avoiding the window meant our bed awkwardly divided the room in half, with the bedroom door opening almost directly onto it. It just never felt right.

Then I finally asked myself: What if I just ignored the window? Moving the bed in front of it completely changed the flow of the room and opened so much more floor space. Suddenly, everything felt more balanced. I’m a visual person, so I pulled together my vision board, room measurements, and furniture selections into renderings that helped me see how the new layout could actually work. Once I saw everything come together, I was sold. Sometimes the best design decision is letting go of a rule that just isn’t working for your space.

I Kept My Neutral Palette, but Added a Little Drama

I knew I wanted to stick with a calming neutral palette, but I also wanted the room to have a little drama. Over the years, I’ve interviewed so many interior designers who swear by Benjamin Moore’s Pashmina that I knew I had to give it a try. I ordered two oversized peel-and-stick paint samples from Samplize and put them up on the walls for a full week to see how the color looked in different lighting throughout the day. I’m so glad I did, because I couldn’t love this color more. It’s the perfect mix of warm and cool tones, and it looks completely different depending on the time of day. During the day, it’s a beautiful, soft neutral, but at night, especially with warm lighting, it feels so much richer and cozier.

The real turning point, though, was introducing black into our ivory, beige, and brass palette. I fell hard for Mitchell Black’s Deco Fan wallpaper by Bohemian Bungalow the moment I laid eyes on it, and its gorgeous black-and-gold Art Deco-inspired pattern became the inspiration for the rest of the room. I knew I wanted the wallpaper to make a statement, but rather than covering an entire accent wall, I decided to frame it inside peel-and-stick architectural molding so it would feel more like custom artwork. I can’t overstate how much these panels transformed the space. They instantly took the room from basic to boutique, and I built so many of our other design choices around them.

The Bed Became the Star of the Room

Once we settled on the new layout, I knew I wanted an upholstered bed with a little drama. I’d spotted the Arhaus Wyller bed, one of the brand’s bestsellers, during a Personal Shopper visit and immediately fell in love with it. I chose the Tania Cashmere fabric, a beautiful soft ivory, and loved how the curved headboard played against the black-and-gold wallpaper. I also had my heart set on oversized nightstands, which I’ve always loved in boutique hotel rooms, but finding a pair that felt modern, looked beautiful, and had plenty of real drawer storage was surprisingly difficult. After a lot of searching, I landed on a pair of the oversized, 32-inch Saatva Arden nightstands in black oak. They checked every box and added just the right amount of contrast and drama on either side of the bed.

For the finishing touches, I went with this hand-knotted ivory rug to add some softness underfoot and four panels of linen pinch-pleat curtains for that tailored hotel look. I hung the curtains on brass rods I scored on sale during Amazon Prime Day, placing them just below the ceiling to make the room feel taller. The extra fabric gives the windows a fuller, more luxurious look. I love how much interest we were able to add to the room without introducing a lot of color. Mixing different textures and finishes made all the difference.

Layering the Light Made the Bedroom Cozier

I love mood lighting, and I knew I wanted lots of it in our bedroom. I started with a gorgeous pleated drum-shade chandelier from Wayfair that I found for a steal, but I didn’t want to rely on overhead lighting alone. I wanted the room to absolutely glow at night. I added a pair of oversized table lamps I fell for at first sight over at Rejuvenation, a linen and brass floor lamp from Article, and wireless picture lights above the wallpaper panels. Having multiple light sources gives us so many options depending on the time of day and how we’re using the room.

One of my favorite things about the makeover is how different the bedroom feels at night. During the day, it’s bright and airy, but once the lamps come on, the Pashmina walls take on a warmer, richer tone and the whole room feels so cozy. It’s exactly the kind of relaxing atmosphere I wanted, and I’m so glad we didn’t stop at just the chandelier.

How I Made Our Bedroom Both Beautiful and Functional

As much as I wanted a beautiful bedroom, I wasn’t willing to sacrifice functionality to get it. Even though the room isn’t very large, we still needed plenty of clothing storage, a comfortable place to relax, and, yes, a television for one of our favorite pastimes: movie nights in bed. After a lot of searching, I found the perfect black oak eight-drawer dresser that felt classic with a modern twist and offered plenty of storage. Across from the bed, we installed a flush-mounted Samsung Frame Pro TV with a gold bezel which gave the room instant hotel vibes. We even subscribed to Samsung’s art collection so it can display beautiful artwork when we’re not watching TV. We flanked it with black candle sconces for a little added romance. A large round mirror and cozy ivory barrel chair helped finish off the room without adding clutter.

But my favorite finishing touches are the more personal ones. We created a gallery wall of black-and-white photos from our engagement, wedding, and vow renewal using gold frames I found at HomeGoods, and added a custom-framed painting of one of our favorite moments together. I also brought in just a hint of plum with pearlized mauve magnolia faux florals to break up the neutrals.

How We Transformed Our Bed Into a Hotel-Level Escape

For our hotel-inspired bedding, we chose the super luxe Refined Organic Percale Duvet Set and Three Season Down Duvet Insert from Coyuchi. (The bedding is as comfortable as it is beautiful!) To complete our hotel bedding look and feel, we couldn’t resist adding these supremely luxe (yet supportive) latex and down fusion pillows from Avocado. I found our throw pillow covers from one of my favorite Black-owned home brands, The Ashleigh P. Collection — her selection of styles and cover quality are top tier. I filled them with these super plush down and feather inserts, and just like that, our hotel bed was complete.

I love that everything has a place now, the room feels warm and cohesive, and we finally have the relaxing retreat I’d imagined for so long. After nearly seven years, our bedroom finally feels like us. Walking into it at the end of a long day gives me that same feeling I love when we check into a beautiful hotel. Only this time, I don’t have to check out.
