This Budget-Friendly Lightweight Comforter Is Like Sleeping Under a Cloud — And It Keeps Me Warm (But Not Too Hot!)
Comforters, whether down or down alternative, have never been a welcome addition to my bed. I grew up with the bed blanket-lightweight coverlet combo. I never had to deal with stuffing a comforter into a duvet cover — until I started working here last year.
I’ve been highly suspicious of comforters, because they require the extra duvet cover, which seems like more work than it’s worth. And, when I have slept under them in my friends’ houses, they’ve been horrifically stifling, and I wake up drenched in sweat. My opinion of comforters was forever altered late last year when I got to try Quince’s Premium Down Alternative Comforter.
About the Quince Premium Down Alternative Comforter
I’ve been intrigued by Quince for home goods on several fronts. My colleagues have enjoyed Quince’s pillow and many of their sheets sets . But the comforter looked especially impressive. It’s got a hypo-allergenic microfiber fill, 100% cotton sateen shell, baffle box construction (that keeps the fill evenly distributed!), and even corner loops to keep it in place inside a duvet cover.
I opted for the Lightweight option, because as a hot sleeper who sweats, I was concerned that the All-Season might be too heavy for me (there’s also an Ultra Warm). Coming in at only $119.90 for a Full/Queen size, this comforter is a steal compared to its competitors, which normally charge upward of $200 for a comforter. So I decided to put Quince’s down alternative to the test.
First Impressions: Unboxing the Comforter
When I unboxed this comforter, I was surprised by how lightweight it was. It didn’t feel much thicker than a sleeping bag that I used to take camping as a kid. The hypoallergenic microfiber really mimics the feel of down and I loved the feeling of the sateen shell. I did worry that I may have gotten too light a comforter — our apartment is chilly at night and my boyfriend is a cold sleeper.
After wrestling the down alternative comforter into my Peacock Alley duvet cover, I put it on the bed. This comforter is soft and aesthetically pleasing enough to sit on the bed without a duvet cover, but that’s just my personal preference. The combo of the two had a nice effect on my bed, making it looking like an upscale hotel.
Putting It To the Test
The real test was sleeping under it during New York City’s very odd winter weather. Temperatures have been bouncing around from 60 degrees to 20 degrees, and this comforter has been pleasant to sleep under during all of it. I do not wake up looking like I ran three miles, and my boyfriend is warm enough. Everyone wins!
Plus, It’s light enough to the point where it has a nice, comforting weight to it but it isn’t so heavy that you have to yank it from one side of the bed to the other. We are both cover-stealers, so the comforter does occasionally get pulled to one person’s side during the middle of the night (and it hasn’t shown any wear or tear from that experience).
I’d highly recommend this comforter for all types of sleepers. It’s one of the more affordable down alternative comforters out there, and it doesn’t skimp on quality.
