When my husband and I moved to New York, I knew that the sectional sofa we had was not going to come along for the ride. Not only would our new apartment be much smaller than our place back home, but the narrow doorways and stairs meant that not just any sized couch would fit — so we needed something that came in pieces. We also wanted our new sofa to be a sleeper so we could host friends and family who come to visit, thus narrowing down our options even further. The sleeper sofas we found had bulky pull-out mechanisms that wouldn’t fit into our apartment, and the ones we found that would fit in our place weren’t sleepers at all. I began to question whether the couch we were looking for actually existed, until I found Sabai’s new 90-inch Eclipse Sleeper Sofa

Quick Overview

The Sabai 90” Eclipse Sleeper Sofa at a Glance

  • It’s a streamlined sofa that converts into a queen-sized bed
  • It’s easy to assemble without extra tools
  • It’s made with an FSC-certified plywood frame, PFAS-free fabrics, high resiliency foam, and rubberized coconut fiber
  • It’s available in three upholstery fabrics and over 40 colors
  • Measures 32.5”x90”x34”

Design Features That Stand Out

Not to be confused with Sabai’s 70-inch Eclipse Sleeper Sofa (that editors also love!), the new 90-inch Eclipse features a wider frame with seats that aren’t as deep as the smaller Eclipse (though they’re still quite deep —more on that later). Even though both sofa sizes convert to a queen-sized bed, the 90-inch model I tested is intended to be slept on lengthwise (that is, with your feet facing the armrest), so it actually doesn’t require as much floor space.

A crucial selling point for me was that the Eclipse sleeper is delivered in multiple pieces that require assembly, which meant that we’d be able to get the sofa through our apartment’s narrow entryway and stairs. Even better, you don’t need any additional tools to put it together — the included wrench that arrives with your order has you covered. We, of course, opted for white-glove delivery to be on the safe side, and the entire process took no more than 20 minutes. Once assembled, the sofa felt super sturdy. It was a night-and-day difference between the floppy, all-foam (or “boneless”) sofa we’d been using as a temporary fix.

And unlike a traditional sleeper sofa with metal mechanisms that make set-up a fuss, the Eclipse converts to a bed with minimal effort. Just remove the seat cushions and grab the bench seat by the handles to unfold it into a bed in seconds. It’s so easy that anyone who stays over will be able to do it on their own.

Then there’s the expansive array of upholstery options available. The Eclipse is available in three fabrics: a recycled velvet, upcycled poly, and a durable hemp blend, which is what I chose. And you won’t have any trouble finding a color that complements your decor because there are over 40 to pick from, including the cutest striped patterns with contrasting piping detail.

Another standout feature of the Sabai is that every component — from the cushions, armrests, to the fabric covers — is replaceable. So you can buy them individually if needed instead of buying a whole new sofa.

How It Performed

We’ve had the Eclipse sofa for a little over a month now, and it’s singlehandedly made us fall in love with our living room. Its sleek shape and rich color made the space look way more updated. And while I never could’ve imagined that a 90-inch-wide sofa would work in our small Brooklyn apartment, it somehow makes the living room feel larger. Even in bed form, the 60×80-inch sleep surface doesn’t eat up a ton of floor space, so I can still walk around the bed with relative ease.

While we haven’t hosted any guests yet, the foam cushion feels comfy and supportive enough that I feel good about offering the sleeper to my in-laws when they’re in town. And I can always add a mattress topper if needed for extra fluff.

After sitting on the original 70-inch Eclipse sofa to compare, I can say that the 90-inch model I have has more of an upright seat compared to its extra-deep predecessor (the seat is 23 inches deep compared to the original’s whopping 33 inches), but it’s still plenty loungeable. I can lean back, lie out, or sit cross-legged without any issues. And if I scoot all the way back, my feet can still touch the floor (I’m 5’5”, for reference). I’d say the couch is about a medium on the firmness scale; it’s soft enough to nap on (but not impossible to get out of), but supportive enough to support working from home and eating in front of the TV. Plus, it’s large enough that my husband and I can cozy up at our own separate ends of the couch, and when we have friends over, it can comfortably seat up to four people.

The only hiccup I’ve encountered is that the seat cushions will sometimes slide down into the crevice where the bench seat meets the sofa’s back, which causes the seat to slump forward slightly. This hasn’t been a major issue in terms of comfort, but it does require some readjusting every so often. To prevent this, I try to sit towards the back, and not on the edge of the seat, to prevent that from happening. It’s ultimately not a deal breaker for me, but it’s something to keep in mind if you lean forward to work or eat from your coffee table.

I also adore the rich, green “Fir” upholstery I chose. The hemp-blend fabric feels substantial and durable, and after a few small spills from dinners had on the couch, I can confirm that it’s pretty easy to spot-clean, too.

Should YOU Buy the Sabai 90” Eclipse Sleeper Sofa?

If, like me, you’re sofa shopping with a very particular set of requirements: it must arrive in pieces, function as a guest bed, not take up a ton of floor space, and so on… I’d say you’ll find what you’re looking for in the 90-inch Eclipse. And don’t let its 90-inch width deter you; a long wall is all you need, or you can use it as a makeshift room divider, just as I did. I honestly couldn’t be more pleased with the result. I’ve gained extra seating, the guest bed I’ve been wanting, and a stylish, comfortable sofa I actually enjoy lounging on.
