Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I moved from Amsterdam back to Eindhoven when it became clear that my mom had Alzheimer’s. I wanted to live closer so I could help her to stay independent for as long as possible. The goal was to live near the train station (to ease the commute to the office almost 2.5 hours, single journey, door-to-door) and close to my mom. It had to have a garden and preferably two bedrooms and I did not mind updating the home where needed.
What I did not want was an apartment, but when I stumbled upon this place, I was sold. The plan was to start with the bathroom, but the kitchen was slowly but surely dying on me. The oven decided when the food was done, the fridge had a small pond in it, the stovetop was hampering and so was the hood. I designed a new kitchen on the IKEA website, but decided to buy an ATAG stovetop instead (best decision ever!) and bought the door handles somewhere online to avoid the IKEA look and feel (nothing wrong with that, but I prefer to personalize it). In my home you’ll find anything between AliExpress and design, old and new, cheap and expensive, lots of plants. Friends call it a place without compromise, totally me. In the years that I have lived here I have removed and added furniture, it’s ever evolving, never done, always me.
I used to rock bright colors in my previous homes, but found that light, natural colors calm me down. It’s funny how my home is all about light colors, but my wardrobe is is filled with black.
Describe your home’s style in 5 words or less: Light, bright, natural, Scandi, bohemian
What is your favorite room and why? My living/dining room. I love sitting at the table and being able to look outside at the back garden or the front garden. It’s best during spring/summer, doors open to let the fresh air and bird sounds in. I do have an office space, but find myself sitting at the dining room table most of the time. All windows in my home look out over one of the gardens (two small ones in the front, a large one in the back). It gives me so much privacy!
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? Some plants, a new sofa (freistil Rolf Benz 180 via westwing.nl) and a beautiful vase (which was on sale) and an interesting statue I found in my mom’s place while clearing it up.
Any advice for creating a home you love? Don’t buy everything at once, mix old with new, don’t follow trends, follow your guts.
