These Are the States With the Most (and Least) Christmas Spirit

With Dec. 25 only one day away, those who celebrate Christmas may be feeling one of two ways right now: super festive and raring to go, or still feeling a little and overwhelmed about just how quickly Christmas Day has come around. Seriously, this year has flown by.

For the fourth year in a row, the team at GetCenturyLink.com has decided to find out which U.S. states have the most—and least—amount of Christmas spirit in 2021. 85% of Americans celebrate Christmas each year, but that doesn’t mean everyone has the same festive feelings.

To determine which states have the most Christmas spirit, GetCenturyLink.com’s data team analyzed two data categories: online activity and area culture. Metrics included Google searches for Christmas movies and gingerbread houses, Christmas music streaming, the number of Christmas Tree farms per capita, and more.

Taking the top spot in the report and having the most Christmas spirit this year is New Hampshire. With plenty of holiday events and activities, including the long-running Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth celebration, it’s no surprise that holiday-loving New Hampshire came out in first place. Utah, the state that ranked first in 2020, moved down to seventh place this year.

Maine took the silver medal, while Montana came in at third, retaining the bronze medal from last year. Kentucky, Connecticut, and Vermont also rated highly (fifth, sixth, and seventh place respectively). In the research, GetCenturyLink.com found that Vermont has the highest number of Christmas tree farms for the third year running.

On the other side of the scale, the report shows that Mississippi, New York, and Washington DC have the least amount of Christmas spirit this year. Although Washington DC had the least Christmas spirit for the past two years, according to the research Washingtonians still Tweet about Christmas the most.
