TikTok isn’t just lip dubs and viral dances. The social media platform is also a design hub for homeowners and apartment dwellers; and according to interior enthusiasts on TikTok, dramatic dark paint, statement backsplashes, and smart storage solutions are among the top kitchen design trends to expect for the rest of this year. UK-based kitchen supplier Magnet recently analyzed some of the top kitchen trends of 2021 and cross-referenced the findings with TikTok searches to determine the most in-demand kitchens.

The results? No surprise here given that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has yielded a desire for more storage solutions, but built-in kitchen pantries came in as the top trend, raking in 218,000K hashtags and over 4.7K Google searches. Floating shelves came in as the second most popular kitchen trend on TikTok, coming in with 31,300K hashtags. Rounding up the top three kitchen trends is kitchen islands, coming in with 23,200K hashtags as quarantine dwellers seek out more counter space.

In terms of decor, dramatic dark paint and dark wooden paneling are trending kitchen colors on TikTok this year, offering a contrast to typical white kitchens. Apartment Therapy has made the case for dark bedrooms, and now TikTok is making the case for bringing the drama to the kitchen. Dark paint or wooden paneling can be contrasted with vibrant islands, cabinets, or feature walls, too. Mud rooms, statement backsplashes, marble kitchens, and statement lighting also made the list of top TikTok kitchen trends.

While social media is an excellent source of design inspo, Hayley Simmons, director of the commercial range at Magnet, shared tips on how to navigate fad trends and emphasized the importance of longevity, too.  “Social media, especially TikTok, gives you an insight into kitchens all over the globe but don’t try to fit it all in your own kitchen,” Simmons noted. “There are trends starting to cycle back, like the revival of kitchen sink skirts. Although this may be a cheaper fixture to get now, you need to think about how it could look in five years and if you’ll still like it when the fad has passed.”

“It’s always best to invest in worktops, tiles and cabinets that have longevity and aren’t part of fast fads,” Simmons continued, adding, “The world has changed a lot in the last year. Kitchens and living rooms are now makeshift offices, so make sure whichever kitchen you choose, it’s so important that it’s functional and works for you and your family.” Tell us! Which TikTok kitchen trend are you coveting?
