I’m So Glad This Magical Tile Trend Is Still a Thing (It Adds So Much Personality!)
There’s something so comforting about approaching a front door with a doormat (bonus points if the front door is painted!); it’s such a simple gesture that makes an area feel so homey. It’s also a first indicator of the type of people living in the home: Did they select an option with a humorous quote (light-hearted and fun) or an inspirational mantra (thoughtful)? Of course, a doormat isn’t a complete character explanation, but it definitely means that someone who loves sentimental home design lives inside.
Some folks might believe in the sentiment on their doormat so fiercely that they want to create a more committed gesture. It’s a fair desire: Adding a mantra for your home sets a vibe or intention for how you want your family and friends to experience time in your space. A home is a reflection of you, so it should literally speak to that.
Sure, you could hang a poster or artwork of your favorite saying on the wall, but if you want more commitment, consider tiling the quote onto the floor. Putting phrases into floor tiles was a huge trend in 2019, and there were rumors that it was almost as popular as neon signs — and for good reason. Most of us often look down while wandering around, and being surprised by a gorgeous tile quote is a good way to add visual interest to a space while boosting endorphins.
You might be thinking, 2019 was years ago — is this trend still a thing? Well, I can ecstatically confirm that it is. Just look at the colorful entryway of cocktail and lifestyle content creator behind Taste & Tipple, Yvonne Langen, and her partner, Michael Rizk’s, home in Ottawa.
The couple was renovating the entire home with the help of Melanie Neault, founder of interior design firm Launch Your Space, and they thought the entryway should have a new life, too. A wall and doorway were removed to make the area feel spacious, and tile was installed so guests with wet shoes could move freely — but their tile was special.
“We used white penny round tiles that Melanie sourced from Ceragres as the field tile, and I painstakingly plotted out an inscription of my signature greeting from my cocktail show,” Yvonne explained at the time of the tour. Black flowers with gray centers were added around the quote, creating an even happier picture.
This thoughtful detail in Yvonne and Michael’s home is so striking. It looks incredible and complements the blue and white striped walls, but it also serves as a warm welcome to all who have the privilege of visiting their cozy home.
