This Unusually Shaped Canopy Bed Created a Separate Bedroom in a Tiny Studio
In late 2025, Apartment Therapy’s Senior Style Editor predicted that canopy beds would be making a major comeback this year. And he turned out to be correct. People are prioritizing warm, whimsical spaces where “eclectorian” design (essentially a mix of Victorian and maximalism) reigns supreme — especially in the bedroom.
“The burgeoning craze for canopy beds makes total sense, as interior designers are ushering in an era where unabashed romanticism is celebrated, and home retailers are moving away from industrial-like poster beds,” Zee Krstic wrote in an article. “It’s why Rococo-style furniture is having a moment, and why even fashion trends are dominated by mentions of figures such as Marie Antoinette (even in Vogue!).”
How to Create a DIY Bed Canopy in a Small Space
What makes the canopy resurgence so exciting is that people aren’t always putting the traditional spin on it. People, like Zach Mauer, who rents a 300-square-foot Manhattan apartment, are rethinking how canopies can create a dramatic and romantic atmosphere in their room. Zach actually made his canopy, and it’s the project he’s most proud of in his apartment.
“It took a while to source all of the components for it. I had to go deep into New Jersey to source the replica Victorian curtain rod — it needed to be a very specific size,” Zach explains. “I also had to travel deep into Bay Ridge to source the vintage upholstery fabric for the canopy itself. The chains and hooks were from The Home Depot, and the wooden dowel was from Michael’s, which I ended up painting black to match the chains and picture frames. I believe that — total — it cost me about $100.”
The Unusual Canopy Bed Shape Feels “Eclectorian”
Although “eclectorian” design is mostly seen in traditional Victorian homes, all of the vintage materials Zach sourced, combined with the modern magazine images he had framed and installed against the upholstery, feel very on-theme. Zach says that he intentionally wanted his home to feel “cluttered” to really give it that lived-in feel, and the timelessness of the materials (the upholstery pattern and Victorian-inspired rod) mixed with his mid-century modern custom bed achieve that look.
It’s so fun watching canopy beds come back, but also seeing how people put their modern, special twist on them — especially when they’re around $100. In fact, most of Zach’s apartment was furnished with gorgeous vintage Facebook Marketplace finds. Check it out in the full House Tour.
