I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

New York renter Kristy Marhin was worried when she brought a large Walmart bookshelf into her 230-square-foot studio apartment in East Village. Her concerns were valid, though. As a former studio renter, I understand the preciousness of every available inch.

However, the bookshelf quickly became her favorite feature in the whole space. What makes this addition so unique is that even though it takes up more floor space, it somehow makes her home feel twice as large by dividing the room.

How a Walmart Bookshelf Actually Made This Studio Feel Bigger

At the time of the House Tour, Kristy admitted that the biggest challenge she faced with her studio apartment was the “tiny” amount of space she had to work with. With only one built-in closet, much of her furniture had to serve double (sometimes triple!) duty.

“My favorite element is the bookshelf. I was actually really nervous when I got the shelf that it would make the space look even smaller, but when I put it up, it was the best decision I could’ve ever made,” Kristy admits. “It divides the space really well, gives me tons of storage, and is also just a really good opportunity to put all my decor items out.”

What makes this bookshelf special is that it only takes up a small spot (31.5 inches x 9 inches), but offers so much vertical storage thanks to shelves spanning 75.5 inches. Six shelves display some of Kristy’s favorite items, including a ceramic sneaker vase that was a housewarming gift. While the bookcase provides her with some storage, it doesn’t block natural light thanks to its open shelves.

The bookcase looks almost like a LEGO construction, thanks to its asymmetrical shape. It doesn’t just provide function; it also acts as a conversation piece, and Walmart shoppers agree. “I chose this model because it is so unique and unlike normal straight shelves. It was super easy to put together. The white finish is very nice as well. It looks great in my bedroom! Love it,” Dinah wrote in an online review. Another shopper wrote, “It looks great, a different kind of book shelf, quite happy with it.”

Although Kristy took a risk by adding another piece of furniture to her small apartment, it paid off. It gives her so much storage, lets her display her treasured items, and also makes the space feel larger by dividing the living area from the sleeping space. (She could also use it as a nightstand while in bed or a side table while on the couch.) If you want a bookcase that truly does it all, consider this option from Walmart.
