I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

No matter how old I get, I still believe a good piece of furniture or chic decor item is just that — regardless of what store section it comes from. For example, this small apartment’s dining area wouldn’t be complete without an IKEA toy storage bin turned into a comfortable seating option. IMO, if I don’t regularly open my mind to shopping in unexpected aisles, then I’m seriously missing out. (Design FOMO, anyone?)

I’ve found out that other people think like that, too. Spencer Fried and Katelyn Merrill have rented a mid-century modern-filled Los Angeles apartment for the past six months, and the one design challenge was maximizing the home’s 675 square feet. “It’s quite a small apartment, so we had to maximize every inch of space and make every item useful,” Spencer said at the time of the House Tour.

Although the primary bedroom was small, the couple didn’t need to sacrifice anything thanks to their clever shopping find. To create a vanity for Katelyn, they bought West Elm’s Statement Knob Desk from the kids section. It fit perfectly in the room’s niche!

Why You Should Consider Furniture Shopping in the Kids Section

The West Elm Statement Knob Desk is made for children but can also work in more mature spaces. (It’s also perfect to grow with children as they age, too.) What makes this desk-turned-vanity playful yet sophisticated is the rounded shape and large, funky knob. It comes in two colors and measures under 40 inches wide, making it suitable for smaller spaces. Plus, West Elm is an Apartment Therapy favorite, and editors rave about their sofas and its gorgeous beds — so their furniture is AT-recommended.

If you’re looking for a similar option that’s a bit cheaper, consider the Wondrous Iconic console table available on Wayfair. It’s under $280 and features a rounded shape, along with two drawers. It’s worth noting that this option is slightly larger than the West Elm option (approximately 59 inches wide), but its thin profile makes it look sleek and narrow.

Shopping in the kids section, like Spencer and Katelyn did, opens up a world of furniture possibilities. Plus, it’ll even be a good icebreaker story when people are touring your home. To see more of the couple’s gorgeous apartment, visit the full House Tour
