Even if you prioritize home cooking or taking bubble baths to de-stress, there will never be a more personal part of the home than your bed. It’s where you go to escape after a long day, and it might even be where you work and lounge, too. That’s why it’s so important to invest in a good frame — and when it comes to quality and design, West Elm‘s bed frames are worth considering. You’ll want something sturdy and made of high-quality materials that suit your aesthetic.

The good news is that you have our Personal Shopper series, in which we visit the showrooms and stores of your favorite home retailers and put their furniture to the test. This time, we’re revisiting West Elm, whose sofas, dining tables, rugs, and coffee tables we’ve also reviewed. Below, you’ll see the list of every bed frame we viewed in-store, along with details on what space and lifestyle each suits best.

Why West Elm?

West Elm is an editor- and reader-favorite store for all things home and kitchen, including, of course, beds. The impressive selection not only looks good, but the products can also be delivered directly to your home with white-glove delivery. West Elm offers free furniture customization and design guidance, if needed, as well as complimentary swatches from a plethora of upholstery options to help you find your ideal materials and colors.

Below are the exact beds we tested — both store bestsellers and newer models we were excited to finally see in person.

The Criteria

We judged every West Elm bed frame in-store based on the following five criteria to help us determine whom the bed suits best, from the style maven to the small-space apartment dweller.

  • Customizability: Does it come in different varieties? How many colors, finishes, materials, or sizes is it available in? How granular can you get when customizing the bed frame?
  • Space needs: How much space does the bed frame require? Does it have a canopy or need high ceilings? Is it particularly bulky or does it stay close to its appointed mattress size?
  • Platform height: How high off the ground is the bed frame? Would it generally require bending down or reaching up to get in?
  • Storage capacity: Does the bed frame include drawers? Does it have space underneath for under-bed storage? Does its headboard have storage capacity?
  • Appearance: What style of decor does the bed frame suit best? Does its design lean warm and rustic or sleek and modern? Is it classic with upholstery and detailing or contemporary with clean lines and versatile minimalism?

Why You Should Trust Us as Testers

Contributor Nikol Slatinska and Shopping Writers Megan Gray and Alexa Casanova tested (and re-tested) every West Elm bed. We’ve tested and reviewed furniture for the Personal Shopper series to help readers find the best pieces for their homes, especially small spaces. From bed frames and sofas to dining tables and accent chairs, we’ve covered it all — making us furniture experts.

Every Editor-Tested Bed Frame at West Elm

We spent multiple days at the West Elm store in New York City, evaluating the brand’s beds on their design, customizability, and storage capacity. Here’s what we loved.

Best for Customization: Andes Bed

What impressed us: The Andes bed invites you to climb in and get comfy with its distressed velvet upholstery, which is simultaneously soft and textured. Its clean-lined headboard and tall metallic legs add a touch of glam, making the bed a stylish accent in addition to a fundamental piece of furniture. You also get decent under-bed storage space for slim bins and boxes.

Of all the beds we viewed at West Elm, this one was also the most customizable. Choose from five bed sizes, two headboard styles (including a vertical tufted design), two headboard heights, and numerous upholstery fabrics and colors. You also have a choice of dark pewter legs if bronze doesn’t suit your fancy.

What we love

  • The soft upholstery
  • Space for under-bed storage
  • The stylish bronze legs
  • Very customizable

Good to know

  • Might be too minimal-looking for maximalists
  • There are only two leg options: bronze or pewter

Best for Small Spaces: Mid-Century Bed

What impressed us: Frequent movers will love the simplicity of the Mid-Century bed. With an elegantly sparse silhouette such as this one, you won’t have to lug a heavy platform base down the stairs or struggle to avoid ruining upholstery. On top of that, you get a solid amount of under-bed space for out-of-season linens and garments.

But this pick isn’t just practical — we immediately recognized it as one of West Elm’s best-selling mid-century collection pieces, thanks to its tapered legs and full wood construction. You can buy it in white and cerused white, but we love the warmth of the acorn finish. No matter how many years pass, the classic ’60s-inspired frame will always look good and hold up splendidly. What’s more, the bed is made from sustainably sourced wood in a Fair Trade Certified facility, so you can truly feel good about your purchase.

What we love

  • The no-frills silhouette
  • Lots of under-bed space for storage
  • Its stylish vintage look
  • It's small-space-friendly

Good to know

  • There's little room for customization
  • Might be too minimal for some

Best Farmhouse Style: Anton Solid Wood Bed

What impressed us: If you want to curate a cottagecore vibe or you simply want to add texture to your space, the Anton bed is the model for you. Its sustainably sourced mango wood is smooth to the touch, but it sports a mismatched panel finish that looks even more charming IRL.

We also couldn’t help but notice the bed’s slightly recessed front legs, which almost make the platform look like it’s floating at first glance. The back legs are just the headboard, which extends all the way down, resulting in a clean square frame. This, coupled with the generous floor-to-side-rail height, means you could definitely get away with storing bulky boxes underneath your queen- or king-size frame.

Really, the Anton is the perfect backdrop for just about any assortment of decor; the fact that it comes in two different wood finishes (and two made-to-order ones) is merely a bonus.

What we love

  • The charming wood-paneled design
  • The clean square frame and lean legs
  • Lots of under-bed storage space
  • Complements an assortment of decor

Good to know

  • Not customizable
  • Not small-space-friendly
  • More rustic/cottagecore than modern

Best Bed with Storage: Laurent Pop-Up Storage Bed

What impressed us: Having a storage bed doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style. Case in point: The Laurent Pop-Up Storage Bed. Its curved, cloudlike outline is visually stunning and cleverly conceals the storage features underneath (although it may not be great for small spaces). You get plenty of hidden room — measuring 59.75 inches in width, 80 inches in depth, and 7.5 inches in height — which is incredibly simple to access using the integrated straps, requiring very little elbow grease. That means you can store linens, clothes, pillows, and anything else you want to keep out of sight.

The bed’s low-profile design ensures effortless entry and exit, although it leaves no space for under-bed storage. However, given the vast storage capacity hidden directly beneath the mattress, this lack of clearance isn’t really a dealbreaker. Plus, with 66 diverse color and fabric combinations available (like bouclé and velvet), you will have numerous options to customize the piece to match your style.

What we love

  • Mattress easily pops up for ample storage
  • Feels like you're sleeping on a cloud
  • Textured upholstery has subtle, neutral variations
  • Luxe modern look

Good to know

  • Low-profile
  • Not small-space-friendly

Best Minimalist Style: Miles Wood and Upholstered Bed

What impressed us: Leaning effortlessly into styles ranging from boho to Scandi, the Miles Bed features a clean, simple design. Even though its shorter headboard lends it a chic, low-profile appearance, we were delighted by its highly elevated base, which provides ample space for under-bed storage.

If you prefer to avoid the hassle of sorting through endless wood finishes, leg styles, and upholstery options, this model is an excellent choice. The Miles features a cream-colored linen-weave fabric that coordinates beautifully with nearly any bedding color, while the elegant, rounded contours of its headboard and legs offer a highly versatile touch. This mixed-material piece is bound to remain stylish and on-trend, no matter what is popular in interior design or what season it is.

What we love

  • The mixed materials and textured wood
  • Complements any interior style
  • Lots of underbed storage

Good to know

  • Not a lot of customizable options
  • Only four wood/upholstery styles

Best Cozy Style: Rorie Upholstered Shelter Bed

What impressed us: With its enveloping silhouette and smooth, curved lines, the Rorie Upholstered Shelter Bed instantly presents itself as a cozy sanctuary. It features generous all-around padding upholstered in your choice of fabric, enhanced by elegant piping details, while its elevated yet low-profile platform gives the sensation of resting on a floating cloud.

The headboard features that coveted wingback design that cradles you comfortably while helping to dampen sound. Supported by chunky, tubular legs that enhance its welcoming aesthetic, the bed is offered in 73 color and fabric variations. On the downside, the frame lacks built-in storage and requires a significant amount of floor space — particularly in larger sizes. Because of this, it is best suited to homeowners or individuals with plenty of room who do not intend to move all the time.

Credit: Megan Gray

What we love

  • Customizable design
  • All-over padding
  • High platform with a low profile
  • Enveloping wingback headboard

Good to know

  • No storage
  • Might not be ideal for small spaces

Best Statement-Maker: Lana Upholstered Bed

What impressed us: If we’re being honest, the Lana bed was a personal favorite among the models we viewed. How could you not get swept up in its dreamy shape and fabric? There is actually a handful of beautiful upholstery you can choose from, including a blush-pink velvet, although we viewed the bed in a pretty spectacular bouclé that was surprisingly soft.

Even with the bench in front, we caught a glimpse of the Lana’s striking metal legs, which taper into fine points. If you like the look of a wingback headboard but want something a little more unique, we say go with this pick. Modern spaces can often look a bit harsh because of all the angular lines, so this is a great antidote.

Credit: Megan Gray

What we love

  • The curved wingback headboard
  • The luxe bouclé upholstery
  • Glamorous gold-toned legs
  • Decent underbed storage

Good to know

  • Tall platform height
  • Ultra-modern look might clash with other interior styles

Specifications:

  • Styles: The Lana line includes a storage bed and a daybed
  • Sizes: Twin, full, queen, king, California king
  • Upholstery: Available in 31 color options
