They can also serve as your work-from-home desk, kids’ homework spot, or even a dining table in a pinch. Which is why choosing the right one matters, and West Elm has tons of options. As your Personal Shopper, we made it easier to shop West Elm coffee tables by visiting the Brooklyn headquarters (and other New York locations) to check out every coffee table on display.

Just as we did with their sofas, bed frames, rugs, dressers, and dining tables, we evaluated each coffee table (multiple times!) to determine the perfect match for your needs. All you have to do is read on and discover which West Elm coffee tables are right for you.

We judged every West Elm coffee table we found in-store based on the following five criteria. This helped us determine whom the table suits best and for what type of use.

• Versatility: Can the table be used as more than just a coffee table? How suitable is it for working from home?
• Appearance: What style does it best suit? Does it lean more traditional (i.e., detailing, dark wood) or more contemporary (i.e., sleek, light wood)? Does it work with a range of different decor styles?
• Safety: Is it family-friendly? How well does it suit the needs of people across a range of abilities? Do the shape and materials make it a safe option for families with kids?
• Durability: Does it stain or scuff easily? Do you have to use coasters? Would it age well with regular use?

Every West Elm coffee table was tested by former Shopping Writers Nikol Slatinska and Kendall Cornish. The two have tested and reviewed furniture for the Personal Shopper and Best List series to help readers find the best pieces for their homes — especially small spaces. Nikol and Kendall went to multiple West Elm locations in NYC to evaluate the brand’s coffee tables on their appearance, safety, and storage capacity.

What impressed us: The Anton Solid Wood coffee table‘s slender top is paired with two thin yet wide pillar legs, creating the ideal minimalist profile. With all the space underneath, this piece can be kept vacant for a clean look or given a rustic feel by using baskets to store blankets or books.

The solid kiln-dried mango wood feels durable, but at the same time it manages not to look too bulky or heavy-duty. In short, the Anton is built to last, to look good, and to provide plenty of tabletop space.

What impressed us: An AT reader favorite, this modern, industrial-style coffee table offers both storage and work-from-home desktop solutions. The lift-top feature moves smoothly (it’s operated by a soft-touch divot handle) and forms a raised desktop, complete with storage space underneath. Both a space-saver and multitasker, the Industrial Pop-Up is an ideal solution for apartment-dwellers.

What impressed us: This drum-style table has a clean, contemporary design and three hidden storage compartments behind fluted sliding doors. Its versatile wood finish makes it a great pick for a wide range of aesthetics, and the floor sample we saw suggests that the wood grain hides nicks and imperfections pretty well. Combine that detail with the storage and lack of sharp edges, and you’ve got one great coffee table for families with small kids.

What impressed us: The Chadwick table effortlessly taps into the mid-century modern vibe that West Elm is known and loved for. It would remain a pleasantly basic piece, were it not for the woven shelf that lies beneath its surface. The light-colored, rattan-like material stands out against the rich acacia wood, which sports a warm walnut finish.

Together, the mixed materials create a dynamic final product that would look right at home amid boho-inspired pieces — or not. The truth is, the Chadwick model is easy to pair with any aesthetic, and it’s plenty practical, to boot. The no-frills design sports safe, rounded tabletop edges and built-in levelers, which help the slightly out-turned legs adapt to different floor levels.

What impressed us: Versatility is the name of the game with these vintage-inspired nesting tables. The combination of glass and metal makes them easy to pair with a wide range of home decor aesthetics, and the nesting design means you can orient the two tables to perfectly suit your space (great for entertaining!). Whether your home is furnished with vintage shop finds or modern pieces, we think the Elwell set will blend in seamlessly. Just note that, while durable, the tempered glass top might be susceptible to scratches over time.

What impressed us: If you want to create a contemporary living space without having to utilize harsh, angular lines, try something like the Cannellini table. Although it’s very current, this model will help soften up the vicinity and make it that much more inviting — especially when you take into account its rich brown wood construction.

We found the feel of the thick acacia wood to be soft and almost velvety to the touch. The table’s chunky cylindrical legs pair seamlessly with its bean-shaped top, which is plenty spacious for movie night snacks. Indeed, not only will the Cannellini wow guests, but it’ll also make them (and you) feel right at home with its eye-catching yet practical features.

What impressed us: While this isn’t necessarily a small coffee table, its multi-purpose design makes it a great pick for apartment-dwellers. The lid pops up to reveal a wide storage compartment, and you can also use the popped-up top for working from home or enjoying a meal in front of the TV. 

We also love the contemporary silhouette of this table, with its cylindrical legs and pretty fluted details. The rectangular shape also has rounded edges, so it’s another great pick for families with small kiddos — however, during our testing we considered the fact that little fingers could get pinched in the storage lid. It does fall slowly, but it’s worth mentioning!

What impressed us: As with the Elwell tables above, nesting-style tables are a great option for small spaces because you can use the smaller one as a side table should you need storage next to an accent chair, or slide it under the bigger table to free up floor space. The Sintra tables can be purchased individually, although we recommend picking up the pair, which includes one table with a 30-inch diameter and one with a 36-inch diameter.

What’s also cool about the duo is that each piece has a slightly upturned edge, which helps prevent items from rolling off the top, and it’s made from ultra-durable metal. Although the tables are simple in appearance, they sport hand-hammered legs that lend a nice touch of texture to the surrounding area.

What impressed us: The beachy, modern silhouette of the Leona Coffee table will have you California dreamin’. We loved the combination of airy, light wood with a more industrial cement base. Plus, the circular pedestal design means it’s a good fit for rounding out large and small spaces alike (as long as you can accommodate a 36” diameter.)

Rounded edges are a plus for the Leona table, but there isn’t any storage with this option. Still, if you’re looking to make your living space feel breathable, organic, and modern, it’s an excellent pick.

What Impressed Us: If your space screams “modern luxury,” the Keegan Marble Storage Coffee Table is right up your alley. This beauty combines Baswara marble and solid acacia with a burnt umber finish for a super-sophisticated look. The Keegan has a larger footprint, but the striking rectangular design makes this option a gorgeous statement piece for spacious living rooms.

Plus, the large footprint isn’t just empty space — there are two large drawers that open on gliders for plenty of added storage for games, toys, and linens. Just be mindful that the drawers and sharp corners might be drawbacks if you have small kids.

What impressed us: This unique silhouette is great for modern or mid-century living spaces, thanks to the combination of tempered glass and swoopy, U-shaped wooden legs. The entire aesthetic of the Harper Coffee Table is airy, light, and artsy, which is a great contrast to the table’s slightly larger 46-inch footprint. 

With adjustable levelers on the legs and an acorn finish, this glass-top table is a showstopper. However, the sharp corners and glass top mean it’s probably a better pick for households without kids.

What impressed us: If you’re on the hunt for a marble coffee table, we say “look no further.” The Lorraine table was a standout for us, thanks to the intricate, dramatic veining we saw on display in the store, which will easily help hide any scratches or stains it accumulates over time. With rich, earthy tones in the Toronto marble and a cool walnut finish on the mango wood legs, it’s a piece that will have a unique look and feel depending on the table you receive. 

We also liked that the curved double legs provide a pop of modernity for contemporary aesthetics. But while this table has an open silhouette (note: no storage), it is heavy, so keep that in mind if you’re someone who moves your furniture around often!
