I love my morning and evening skincare routine. It’s a small act of self-care that I tend to luxuriate in, and I know my skin benefits from it too. This everyday ritual helps structure my day, as the routine signals that it’s time to get up and at ‘em, or that it’s time to wind down and get ready for bed. All my essentials used to sit very tidily on a small tray that rested on the bathroom counter. That is, until the number of essentials grew.

Not only was I trying to keep skincare on the tray, but I also needed space for my glasses, contacts, contact solution, deodorant, lotion, dry shampoo … and really whatever else I wanted to be able to reach for daily. My items soon spread out to just beyond the tray, and while I didn’t mind at first, I knew there had to be a better way to keep all of my toiletries within arm’s reach, instead of tucked away in a bathroom cabinet.

When I was scrolling through TikTok and Instagram, I kept seeing influencers with elaborate collections of skincare products lined up on aesthetically pleasing floating acrylic shelves in their bathrooms. Even though my collection of essentials isn’t quite as large as those of the influencers I see on social media, I decided to give these floating shelves a go. My bathroom counter was begging for a change, and my little tray was working overtime. I added them to my Amazon cart, and the shelves arrived the next day.

Upon opening them, I first noticed how sturdy the shelves seemed. They’re made from durable plastic and they arrived with a screwdriver and all the hardware for mounting. After just a few minutes of using a level and drilling the screws into the wall, the shelf was up. While it was nice that the package included a screwdriver, a drill is required to put a hole into the wall for the anchor, so be sure to have yours charged and ready to go.

Once it was up, the fun part was adding all of my toiletries. Organizing products by color is a nice touch and makes the shelf all the more satisfying to see upon entering my bathroom. I started with clear glass bottles and products with white labels on the left side, and let the colors gradually get darker towards the right side. All of a sudden, my little tray on the bathroom counter wasn’t so crowded, and having all my toiletries displayed on the wall turned them into decor. Cute!

I still keep my tray on the counter, as I stash my glasses, contact solution, and facial cleanser there, but I don’t mind having it there at all now that it’s not overcrowded. Since managing my skincare clutter, I’m realizing that having clearer bathroom counters really does make a difference when it’s time to get ready. Instead of reaching into a jumble of products, I can now find them easily in their neat wall display. It’s also helpful when I need to use things like a hair dryer, or when I decide to do my makeup for the day — because there’s more room on the counter, it doesn’t feel like I’m adding to the chaos.

I’m so pleased with my neat skincare shelf and newly spacious counter. I’d recommend it to anyone who has an abundance of toiletries that could use some organizing, or apartment dwellers with tiny bathrooms and minimal surface area. Keeping your counter clutter-free and opting for wall storage is a great way to add a little zen to your morning and evening routine.
