There’s something so satisfying about slipping into the sheets of a nice hotel bed. It feels like an escape, a rare interlude into a self-contained world where the main objective is to relax and sleep better than you can remember. A nice hotel bed can be an instant mood booster. It can be a topic of conversation over breakfast. And sometimes, it can even be a highlight of a whole vacation.

But then you go home, and you unwittingly compare your bed to the one at that revered hotel. Maybe yours isn’t as big, and perhaps the mattress isn’t as soft. Changing those components can be a big undertaking, particularly while on a budget — but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a smaller, still-meaningful step toward a more luxurious (and comfortable) bed. A hotel bed’s sheets are often very soft, and that’s a detail you can improve quickly. That’s exactly how the founders of Brooklinen felt, too.

What is Brooklinen?

Brooklinen founders Vicki and Rich Fulop were on vacation when they both agreed that their hotel sheets were so comfortable that they wanted to purchase the same ones for their own home. The only problem? The sheets were $800, well beyond their budget.

A year later, in 2014, the couple launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new direct-to-consumer brand of reasonably-priced, high-quality bedding. They were hoping to raise $50,000 for their new business. Instead, they raised more than $230,000, and thus, Brooklinen was born.

In the decade that followed, Brooklinen has grown to become one of the most popular direct-to-consumer bedding brands, and is beloved by almost every editor here at Apartment Therapy. In fact, editorial shopping director Jada Wong has tried every single bedding set from Brooklinen, and yes, she does have a favorite.

What are the differences between Brooklinen’s fabric collections?

Brooklinen has six bedding collections all based on different fabric and weave types so you can catch the best Zs.

Luxe Sateen

  • Most popular collection, and the most versatile bedding type
  • Made with long-staple cotton and a three-over-one weave for a soft feel and slightly shiny look

Classic Percale

  • Best for hot sleepers, given its crisp weave and cooling attributes
  • Made from long-staple cotton with a one-yarn over, one-yarn under weave for breathability and a crisp look

Organic Cotton

  • Made with 100% organic cotton, and is the most sustainable option
  • Only available as a percale weave, this pick is crafted to cool even the hottest sleeper

Washed Linen

  • Made from 100% European flax
  • Can be used year-round because of an airy weave that still has a bit of heft and weight due to the material
  • Has a natural, wrinkly look after the first wash — it’s part of the charm!

Heathered Cashmere

  • Made with 95% cotton and five percent Himalayan cashmere for softness and warmth
  • Best for cool sleepers

Brushed Flannel

  • Made with 100% cotton flannel that’s super cozy and warm
  • Best for those who run cold when sleeping, and for cooler temps

The washed linen sheets achieve the type of casual-cool wrinkle that makes your bed look ready for its closeup at any moment, and they get softer with each use. This is editorial shopping director Jada Wong’s absolute favorite bedding from Brooklinen because of their year-round versatility — they’re super breathable, so you can use them in the spring and summer, but they’ve still got a nice weight to them that feels cozy during the colder months, too.
