After having lived in my current apartment for a little over a year, I feel like I’m doing okay on storage space. No longer do my kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanity look cluttered with small, miscellaneous objects. That being said, my bedroom’s lack of closet storage always seems like a neverending hassle. My one saving grace was acquiring a dresser, which instantly increased my closet space tenfold and changed the look of the entire room for the better. Take it from me: Finding the right dresser for your bedroom is beyond important, which is why I was so excited to look at all of the dressers at Ashley for AT’s Personal Shopper series.

The Criteria
I judged every Ashley dresser I saw in-store based on the following five criteria, and gave each category an average rating between 1 and 5. These scores helped me determine whom the dresser suits best.
- Appearance: What style of decor does the dresser suit best? Does its design lean warm and rustic or sleek and modern? Is it classic with a warm wooden finish and detailing or contemporary with clean lines and a mixed-material design?
- Storage capacity: Are the drawers big enough to house most of your wardrobe? Do you get a substantial surface on top for other items? Are the dresser’s legs tall enough for storing items underneath the body?
- Space requirements: How much space does the dresser take up? Does it require a lot of horizontal floor space, or does it make good use of vertical space? How tall is it?
- Drawer glidability: How easy is it to pull out the drawers? Do they catch and require a lot of muscle, or do they glide out easily?
- Drawer depth: How far back do the drawers extend? Are they spacious or compact? Are they all the same size?

Best Boho Style: Cielden 5-Drawer Chest of Drawers
What impressed me: The realistic-looking rattan drawer laminate.
The fewest number of drawers any dresser had on Ashley’s floor was five, but make no mistake about the Cielden dresser — it’s almost as wide as your standard six-drawer dresser. It’s also tall and thus not exactly the best pick for small spaces, but it will be able to fit a lot.
Also of note is the Cielden’s boho-inspired design. The rattan paneling on the drawers is actually a laminate, but it wasn’t until I got up close and touched it that I realized this. In other words, it looks almost eerily authentic. I also appreciated the dresser’s light, gray-toned finish and tall, tapered legs, which help give it a lofty appearance. The bronze drawer pulls were the perfect finishing touch for this otherwise laidback piece.

Best Coastal Style: Isanti 5-Drawer Chest of Drawers
What impressed me: The smooth mango wood and wide silhouette.
Most of Ashley’s dressers are made of manufactured wood, but the Isanti is primarily made of solid mango wood, which explains its higher price tag. Despite its paneled design, the material is smooth to the touch and has that easygoing look associated with coastal-inspired furniture. The wide dresser naturally has wide and deep drawers, although I should note that they all have a medium height and don’t have the smoothest glide.
That being said, if you’re not a fan of busy designs, you’ll enjoy the Isanti dresser’s lack of hardware and ornamentation, as well as its rich brown hue. Most importantly, it packs a lot of storage space into a five-drawer silhouette and will serve as a solid supplement to your closet.

Best Romantic Style: Lavinton 5-Drawer Chest of Drawers
What impressed me: The ornate drawer pulls and cherry wood finish.
I’m so used to seeing modern furniture at nearly every store I visit, so Ashley’s traditional designs were, ironically, a breath of fresh air. The Lavinton is just ornate enough without being gaudy, and I found myself appreciating its fluted, column-like sides and cute bun feet on closer inspection. What’s more, this pick has vintage-inspired black metal drawer pulls that reminded me of old-timey door knockers, and its narrow but tall drawers slid in and out seamlessly.
You’ll also be happy to learn that, at 35 inches wide, the Lavinton is not oversized like the other five-drawer dressers I had viewed up to this point. As a result, it’s a fabulous choice not only for those after a vintage aesthetic, but also small-space dwellers.

Best for Small Spaces: Cambeck 5-Drawer Chest of Drawers
What impressed me: The whitewashed color and rustic-industrial design.
Most of the dressers I looked at are only available online in one wooden finish, but the Cambeck is available in three, which is part of the reason why I deemed it the best option for small spaces. Of course, it’s relatively compact at 54 inches tall and just under 35 inches wide. But anyone dealing with limited square footage knows it can be hard to find the exact style of furniture you like that also fits within a given space. So it’s nice to have options — even if that merely entails getting to choose between a white, gray, or tan finish.
You’ll also notice that the Cambeck has wide drawer pulls, which give it a rustic appearance. Although they look metal, they’re actually plastic. Of all the dressers I tested, this one isn’t exactly the sturdiest, but it still offers ample storage — and at under $400, it’s a steal.

Most Spacious: Cabalynn 5-Drawer Chest
What impressed me: The rounded corners and cozy aesthetic.
The Cabalynn dresser is my personal favorite in the five-drawer category; there’s something about its pleasant, medium-brown finish and curved corners that I found charming to look at. If its silver drawer pulls look big in photos, know that they’re even more substantial in person.
After testing dozens of dressers and media consoles with annoyingly small pulls or knobs, I can say this is a design detail I value. The drawers are smooth-gliding if a little rickety, and they’re also a good in-between size, especially when you consider that the Cabalynn is neither oversized nor exactly compact. If there’s one “Goldilocks” dresser I think most folks will like regardless of the size of their homes or tastes in interior decor, this is it.

Best Glam Style: Trulani 6-Drawer Chest of Drawers
What impressed me: The varying drawer sizes and flared legs.
Some people believe their furniture should stand out in addition to serving a practical purpose. I think those people would enjoy the Trulani dresser, which has just the right amount of frippery to be noticeable without tipping over into ostentation. Its gleaming silver drawer knobs catch the eye regardless of whether you opt for the dark brown or white finish, and you also can’t ignore those cheeky out-turned legs. There’s also some nice molding around each drawer and the top surface.
What’s more, it’s nice that the top two drawers are smaller than the rest; these would make great storage compartments for small but important items like keys, jewelry, and keepsakes. And, at 38 inches wide, the Trulani is spacious but still small enough for a tiny bedroom.

Most Versatile: Rencott 6-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The big silver drawer pulls and sturdy construction.
Although dressers are meant to go in the bedroom, the Rencott’s matter-of-fact design and big filing cabinet-style drawer pulls make it suitable for an extra bedroom or home office if your primary bedroom is already maxed out on storage space. Its top two drawers are a pretty normal size, but the bottom four are huge. Not only that, but they’re also lined with a luxurious black velvet material, which further gave me the impression that this is where you’d store important documents or possessions.
Exterior-wise, the Rencott has the same rounded corners I found myself liking on other models, and its light wooden material has a textured feel that helps add dimension. I would classify the dresser’s overall design as classic, which means it’ll never look outdated.

Best Modern: Hennington 6-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The platform base and clean lines.
I know I said the Cabalynn was my favorite dresser in the five-drawer category, but the Hennington dresser is my favorite one overall. I adore its clean, angular silhouette and contemporary platform base. It has a textured gray wooden finish and glossy chrome bar pulls that instantly caught my eye. Size-wise, the Hennington is wide at 63 inches across and pretty tall; it reached to rib height on me, and I’m 5’6”.
When I opened the drawers, I found that the top two were lined in black velvet, which is nice for jewelry and other items prone to tarnishing. All of the drawers were of a medium width, and although they weren’t deep, they were very tall. So if your closet shelves are always overflowing with big stacks of folded pants and sweaters, this dresser would suit your needs very well.

Best Mid-Century Style: Roanhowe 6-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The tall, tapered legs and medium-brown oak finish.
A lot of mid-century-inspired furniture looks the same. The Roanhowe might take inspiration from this time period, but it still manages to stand out from other furniture mimicking the style. Sure, it has the classic tapered legs you associate with the mid-century aesthetic, but it also features recessed drawers framed by rounded trim and similarly rounded wood-and-metal drawer pulls that reminded me of Lincoln logs in the best way.
In fact, everything about the Roanhowe feels a little nostalgic the way you’d expect from a piece of furniture that’s been in your family for generations. Of course, the dresser is also highly practical, thanks to its wide and deep drawers. It would work wonders to help declutter your closet if you have a medium or large bedroom.

Best Farmhouse Style: Robbinsdale 7-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The bun feet and three top drawers.
If you’ve ever been in an actual farmhouse, you know every piece of furniture in it is oversized. That’s part of what makes the Robbinsdale dresser seem so authentic — even if it’s not actually a family heirloom. Even the three smaller drawers at the top are substantial, and they have the same proportions as the four larger drawers underneath: wide and tall, although not overly deep.
The grainy, antique-inspired white finish lends a shabby-chic vibe to the dresser. If you are someone who tends to haphazardly throw your mail onto a table or just be unorganized in general, the Robbinsdale will prove forgiving when piled with a little clutter. Other features that make it charming are its chunky bun feet and round, powder-coated drawer pulls. If you consider cottagecore a lifestyle and not merely a passing trend, you’re bound to fall in love with this quaint dresser.

Best French-Inspired: Realyn 7-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The romantic trim and weathered finish.
The Realynn is also charming and rustic, but in a completely different way from the Robbinsdale. Its dainty metal drawer pulls, weathered finish, and starburst details immediately gave me Rococo vibes, but countryside edition. It looks like a piece Marie Antoinette would’ve had in the hamlet where she cosplayed as a peasant.
Practically speaking, the Realyn has three narrow drawers at the top that would be good for storing holiday cards and save-the-dates, or maybe even your out-the-door lip balm rotation. The four drawers underneath aren’t particularly wide but they are tall, so they’ll definitely serve a need, whether that entails accommodating extra bed linens or your sock collection. Because the Realyn is also somewhat tall for a horizontal dresser, it could also make a good vanity. It’s certainly pretty enough for the job!

Best Art Deco-Inspired: Rowanbeck 7-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The curved corners and spacious, smooth-gliding drawers.
The Rowanbeck dresser looks both Art Deco and futuristic at the same time, all thanks to its cube-like silhouette, oversized silver drawer pulls, and sleek black finish. Because it also has a black platform base, it almost appears to float. Its material is textured but soft to the touch, and its drawers are all sizable and well-proportioned — even the smaller three on top.
Because it doesn’t embody a specific design period to a T, the Rowanbeck will never look outdated; but as I scanned over the entire bedroom collection that the dresser was part of, I certainly thought it looked trendy. Most importantly, you get plenty of storage — so much so that you might no longer see the need for a walk-in closet once you have it.

Best Oversized: Jorlaina 9-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The recessed sides and circular drawer pulls.
Not only is the Jorlaina dresser‘s size imposing, but its unique design features further help make it unignorable. I’m specifically talking about the large silver ring pulls, as well as the thick, lofty legs that make this pick even taller than your standard horizontal dresser. The six smaller drawers on the sides sit slightly further back than the three big drawers in the center — this also gives the dresser a stately appearance.
Of course, the drawers offer optimal storage space for clothes and accessories — especially because they’re more wide than they are tall. I also found the Jorlaina’s surface, which has a cool silver border, to be quite long. This comes as no surprise when you consider that the dresser is the length of your average loveseat. This also makes it a great spot for storing jewelry, a vanity mirror, and decorative accents.

Best Antique Style: Welltern 9-Drawer Dresser
What impressed me: The detailed corners and legs and contrasting materials.
The other most notable nine-drawer dresser I viewed was the Welltern. It’s the same concept as the Jorlaina in terms of its impressive width and recessed side drawers. But this dresser differentiates itself with its intentionally worn black finish and majestic silver bar pulls. Both of these qualities lend an old-world vibe and ultimately led me to deem this dresser the best antique style.
It goes without saying that the Welltern offers tons of storage in the form of both wide and deep drawers. As I opened them, I noticed the detailed corners and legs, which looked like they could have been carved by hand. This pick leaves nothing to be desired in terms of both looks and storage capacity, so if you’re lucky enough to have a room that can accommodate a nine-drawer dresser, this is a solid option.
