Bohemian interior design is known for its relaxed, lived-in feel, which makes it a natural fit for living rooms where comfort and connection are key. In true bohemian style, these qualities are achieved through a mix of layered textures, patterns, and colors that are deeply inspired by nature, global influences, and personal storytelling. It’s a look that evolves, shaped by the pieces you love most — and if there’s one guiding principle, it’s that there are no hard-and-fast rules.

That said, boho spaces typically share a recognizable “fingerprint,” so to speak. Natural materials, earthy color palettes, low-slung furniture, and an abundance of cozy textiles set the tone; collected objects, vintage finds, and plenty of greenery add personality and depth.

While color is certainly embraced in boho design, walls and statement furniture are often left neutral, making way for pops of color through decor and textiles. The result is an effortlessly eclectic look that feels both intentional and inviting — proof that boho design is less about following a formula and more about creating a home that reflects you.

Editors at Apartment Therapy have featured hundreds of homes that nail the bohemian spirit and look, and I pored over our house tour archive to find the very best boho living rooms. Below, 10+ real living rooms where design has verged across neutral minimalism to colorful, eclectic spaces. Take note of these real-world tips for your own space!

1. Highlight Natural Wood

If your home has natural-wood millwork, it provides the perfect base for a bohemian-style living room. Earthy materials like wood are a huge part of this design style, so resist the urge to paint the millwork (gasp!) and let it shine in all its natural glory, as seen in this beautiful bohemian ranch in Ojai, California.

2. Invest in Leather Furniture

Natural materials are foundational in bohemian design, and genuine leather tops the list. It’s a popular choice for statement pieces in bohemian living rooms, like sofas or accent chairs, as demonstrated in this chic Brooklyn rental. Leather helps ground the space and provides plenty of texture to work off of when decorating the rest of the room.

3. Create a Light, Airy and Bright Look

White walls, light fabrics, and light wood tones form the base of this airy bohemian apartment in Manhattan. The key to pulling off muted color palettes in bohemian design is to bring visual interest through texture and patterns, rather than loud colors. In this space, texture abounds — from the exposed brick wall to the rattan baskets, fringed throw pillows, greenery, wood ceiling beams, and velvet accent chairs.

4. Create a Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are a hot topic in contemporary interior design right now, but they suit the free-spirited bohemian style well. Gallery walls can be used to display family photos, personal momentos, houseplants, and artwork, as seen in this boho Brooklyn apartment.

5. Lean into Maximalism

Are you feeling stuck choosing between bohemian and maximalist styles for your living room? Why not do both? Take a page from this eclectic Japanese home, which features bright colors, funky artwork, mixed patterns, and more houseplants than we can count.

6. Celebrate Retro Style

Blend retro and bohemian for the ultimate nostalgic, cozy vibe in your living room, as demonstrated in this renovated 1920s Dutch home. These two decorating styles share many similarities that help them blend seamlessly, including a love of texture, natural materials, and organic shapes.

7. Choose Woven Wall Decor and Accent Pieces

Using wicker baskets for storage is cool, but have you considered using them as wall decor? Styling baskets and wicker decor on the walls is a huge part of bohemian design; it adds a rustic, textural look. From basket gallery walls to oversized pieces, as seen in this Portland, Oregon, apartment, you can’t go wrong adding wicker to your walls.

8. Design a Statement Wall

Light, neutral walls may be popular in boho design — but they certainly aren’t the only option. Take this colorful Chicago apartment, for example. Deep teal walls are accented with bright pops of red, orange, and blue for a bold, contrasting palette. A low-slung hammock tops off this space, because what’s more bohemian than kicking back indoors?

9. Reach for Live Foliage

Remember the indoor jungle craze of 2020? Bohemian design still embraces this aesthetic today, as seen in this stylish boho Chicago apartment. Have fun with funky planters in unique colors and shapes, natural materials, and different forms to create interest and contrast. Try hanging some plants from the ceiling, placing others on shelves, and styling larger plants in oversized planters in stands or on the floor.

10. Keep Organization in Mind

Boho design can easily lean toward maximalism, but it also feel minimalist when done right. If keeping things simple is your thing, don’t be afraid to incorporate just a few small touches to your space. Take this Barcelona living room as proof. Even though it’s a rather small area, elements like an oversized plant and a boho-inspired throw pillow still lend a free-spirited vibe.

11. Incorporate Organically Patterned Rugs

The walls aren’t the only place that can use some color. Let the floor do the talking with colorful, patterned rugs, as shown here by @restyleart. On that note, don’t be afraid to add more than one rug to your space! Whether they are layered or simply arranged side by side, rugs add a cozy touch to any space and are a great way to introduce color and pattern. The more the merrier!

12. Add Pops of Black Paint

Black isn’t common in bohemian design, but that doesn’t mean it’s not welcome (remember, there are no rules!). This Ohio duplex demonstrates how black can add depth and contrast to a bohemian living room. A black accent wall anchors the room and creates an interesting focal point, while black textiles and decor help tie the space together.

13. Add Oversized Statement Decor

Boho design is known for being eclectic, and you’ll often find unique statement pieces displayed prominently. Whether it’s an oversized piece of artwork from your travels, a unique set of vintage mirrors (you can’t beat the larger-than-life mirrors wrapped in this material in this stunning Brooklyn apartment), a funky statue, or a statement area rug, adding unique pieces to your space can help spark conversation and give your living room a free-spirited feel.
