Your Next Best Hat Storage Is Actually Hanging in the Kitchen

I write about house tours (but I love a good kitchen and kids' room article). My work can be found across AT Media, including The Kitchn and Cubby. I’ve been writing about home-related topics for nearly five years and love seeing how people make their homes unique.

The other day, a friend thoughtfully gifted me a ball cap that made them think of me. Amidst the feelings of gratitude, there was a quiet rumbling of anxiety in the background about how I would store it. Because that’s the thing — in my opinion hat storage is, by far, the worst. Currently I have 10 hats pushed into a single line at the foot of my closet, where I rarely notice them and therefore never wear them.

I never thought about alternative solutions until I stumbled upon how Mackenzie Moulton stores her hats in her Oklahoma City industrial loft. Besides the obvious hat storage, what struck me was how crafty she was for using an unexpected kitchen item to do the job: a coffee mug holder

The Traditional Loft Layout Forced Her to Get Creative with Storage

While Mackenzie has plenty of space (her apartment is just over 900 square feet), the loft layout proved a bit tricky because she has only one big room to work with. Essentially, everything is out in the open, so she wanted to make it look good.

“I purchased a coffee mug holder off of Amazon and used it as a hat holder,” Mackenzie said at the time of the House Tour. While she doesn’t specify which coffee mug hanger she ordered, there are several inexpensive options on Amazon.

A Coffee Mug Hanger Became the Perfect Place for Hat Storage

A quick search on Amazon yields several options for coffee mug holders. However, I was immediately drawn to a 15-inch iron rod that can hold up to 66 pounds (that’s a lot of hats!). It comes with five hooks, but you could easily add more if you wanted to. Unsurprisingly, shoppers have given this product a five-star rating!

People continue to amaze me with how they use unexpected items to solve everyday problems without spending a lot of money. It’s just a matter of reframing how you look at a product. If you’re like me without proper hat storage, consider Mackenzie’s solution; I know I am. To see more of her beautiful loft, visit the full House Tour
