The Best Comforters for People Who Just Can’t with Duvet Covers

As a proud pet parent of not one, but two chihuahuas and a rabbit who constantly jump, play, and sleep in my bed, I have to wash my comforter almost weekly. However, while the comforter is at the wash and fold (sometimes for days, if I’m really lazy), the bed is covered by the sad, white duvet insert, which isn’t the happiest sight. So I went on a mission to find the best comforters that are comfortable and look good, too.

In addition to being a pet parent, I’m also a hot sleeper (I wonder if sleeping with three animals plus a husband has anything to do with that) and I’m a bit particular about how a product looks in my home. I’ve already bookmarked the roundup of the best cooling sheets for hot sleepers, but I was recently looking for a cooling comforter that would easily slip inside my duvet cover and work well in my color-drenched blue bedroom (with a rust-colored rug). After weeks of testing different comforters, I’ve finally found my favorites.

I wanted to test comforters that didn’t necessarily have to go into a cover. I was looking for comforters with unique stitching, different textures on the top and bottom, and options in several color ranges. (IMO, even if a comforter has traditional square-like stitching, a rich or soft color makes it look like it can be displayed on its own.)

Of course, I’m looking for comfort because I feel like part of a comforter’s role is to make it easier for me to fall asleep because of its softness. Whether the shell was made of linen, cotton, or silkier materials, I wanted it to make me feel like I needed to jump into bed immediately.

As a hot sleeper, I was particularly interested in comforters with a range of weight levels. I wanted pieces that could be used on their own in the summer and layered in colder months. I didn’t want to feel squashed or trapped underneath a super-bulky blanket, and finding linens that were plush and lightweight was a bonus.

Because I live in a tiny apartment (with a musician husband that has a lot of gear), I knew I wouldn’t be able to store all of the comforters at my apartment after testing them. So I opted for multiple sizes so that I could bring them to my parent’s house when finished testing to let guests enjoy them, too. 

During the testing process, I slept with each comforter between three to five nights and took notes about each one during and immediately after. I was paying close attention to the weight, how hot I felt underneath each, and the look and feel. I was also looking for special features that allow them to fit inside a duvet cover. (Plus, I also paid attention to how my dogs and rabbit like the comforters, and, spoiler: They loved all of them.)

I selected medium and slept comfortably underneath without getting too hot or cold. As someone who can’t store eight million comforters in their home but hosts friends often, I appreciate that this comforter has corner loops, so I can store it inside my current duvet cover during the colder months and still have a warm blanket to offer guests when they visit.

Buffy’s Cloud Comforter blew my socks off (literally, because I don’t sleep with socks on). The wavy stitching looks so funky and unique, and the color (I chose Heirloom Silver) is metallic, so the light bouncing off of it gave it dimension. It’s definitely a lighter comforter, with 100% GRS-certified, BPA-free recycled PET fill, which helps with temperature regulation. But the sleek sateen weave — not cottony or linen-y — of the shell also kept me cool at night.

The color range in Garnet Hill’s Essential Down Comforter is impeccable. It ranges from soft shades like Himalayan Salt (mauve) and Oxford Blue (light blue; what I chose) to deep, rich colors, including Garnet (deep red) and Celestial Blue (navy). The stitching is more traditional, but the luxe-looking shade lets it stand on its own or serve as an insert. While you can’t change the weight, I found it to be lightweight, comfortable, and squishy.

Of all the comforters I tested, Serena & Lily’s Sutter Linen Ultra Loft Comforter was definitely the most luxe-looking. And while the price tag is a bit steeper than others at $498, I think the timelessness and durability make up for it. This piece will never go out of style. It comes in softer hues, including White, Sky, Coastal Blue, Flax, and Seaglass, if you’re furnishing a pastel-colored room. I also appreciated how there were two textures on either side of the blanket. For example, the exterior has a linen feel, and underneath is a soft cotton percale.

I loved the pleating on Brooklinen’s Washed Classic Percale Comforter. The stitching aded a visual dimension without looking too much like a typical insert. It comes in only one weight option, and as a hot sleeper I found it the most cooling and didn’t feel trapped under it while sleeping. It’s great during the summer months, and I can imagine doubling it up with a quilt when it’s colder. It comes in six colors (I tested the Mint Chambray) and two striped patterns, which look so bold. Because of the colorways, you definitely don’t need a cover for this fluffy, tufted comforter.

What stands out most to me about Pottery Barn’s Honeycomb Comforter, besides how soft and plush it is, is the weaving. Unlike the other comforters I tested, this one has the most intricate detailing, which makes it feel like a statement without being overbearing. I also appreciate that the underside of the blanket has a smooth texture that feels great against my skin. Another bonus? It’s made with good materials grown by farmers who signed the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI™) Standard and is created in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory. A guilt-free item, if I do say so myself!

Anything whimsical and “modern folklore-esque” is having a moment right now, and The Company Store’s Lucenda Classic Cool Cotton Percale Comforter Set fits into that trend. The patterns — which include Scattered Flowers (a pink and orange floral pattern), Framed Flowers (flowers inside blue quatrefoils), and Textured Stripe Green and Gold (self-explanatory) — look like something you’d find in a cozy cottage, and I’m all for it. You can use this comforter on its own or layer it with quilts or shams for an extra-plush bed look. Plus, the recycled polyester fill and smooth, cool texture of the comforter made it comfortable to sleep under without being too hot.
