One of my favorite spring rituals is planting my little veggie garden with tomatoes, peppers, and other easy-to-grow edibles. But one of my least favorite parts of tending to that veggie garden is all the watering (what can I say? I’m a lazy-girl gardener). I do it when necessary, but I’m always looking for ways to make that chore take even less time.

If you’re like me, you’ll be happy to hear that Costco has brought back a gardening favorite from last year: A raised self-watering planter made of sturdy cedar, priced at $149.99 (remarkably, the same price as 2024, too). I stumbled on the find at my last trip to Costco, where I got to check it out in person. Unlike some raised planters this one is plenty tough, thanks to its solid wood construction.

But what sets this planter apart from a plain old raised bed is the fact that it features reservoirs for water that turn this planter into a self-watering plant oasis. You’ll still have to water, of course, but you’ll be able to do it less frequently — certainly a bonus if you’re planning on any spring or summer travel! Excess water can freely drain so that your plants aren’t waterlogged.

Even if you’re a non-lazy gardener, this raised planter is worth a look. For one, it’s a good fit for apartment dwellers or anyone with a small outdoor space, thanks to its size (22” long by 48” wide). The 30-inch height also makes tending to this garden easier on your body — no bending or kneeling! And, for anyone with dogs, the height will also keep them from messing with your plants.

The garden bed retails online for a slightly higher price of $199.99, so if you have a Costco nearby it’s worth a trip to pick this up in person and save $50. Even though I have my in-ground garden bed, I’m considering picking one of these up to plant an herb garden!
