If there’s one thing I know about interior decorating, it’s that indoor plants can totally elevate a space — especially in the kitchen. A propagation station in the windowsill? Adorable. A fresh potted herb next to your spice rack? Ingenious. However, plant ownership isn’t for everyone — they require a considerable amount of attention, and the inevitable casualties can do a number on one’s morale. I’m all for low-maintenance greenery, especially during the holiday season when life seems to pick up at (at least) twice the speed. And just in time, I was thrilled to see the perfectly low-maintenance, yet gorgeous Bloomaker waxed amaryllis bulb three-packs in stock at my local Costco.

Although I’ve found myself giving the “why you should own a plant” pitch to reluctant friends or family members on several occasions, these bulbs seem to be the perfect gateway plant that genuinely require zero effort. The trio is a steal at just $21.99, and the 32-centimeter wax bases come in silver, gold, and red, which are ideal for any holiday spread or occasion. (Online the set is going for $34.99 — which is still a great price — but we suggest you look in your local store for a special deal like the one we found.)

The best part? The self-contained bulbs are ready to grow and blossom as is; they only require natural light over the course of the next few months. No water or soil necessary! The instructions on the packaging note that the bulbs will likely grow at least two stems over four to five weeks, with multiple flowers per stem over the following three to four weeks. The biggest blooms will grow up to 18 inches eight to nine weeks after purchase, so you’ll be enjoying these stunners all winter long.

The amaryllises flower in either red or white — so full and pigmented they almost look fake. Adorned by a twinkly garland, these would stand out as stunning kitchen displays or festive centerpieces that literally unravel before your eyes — Costco’s even calling them “living ornaments,” which we couldn’t have said better ourselves.

An individual bulb or all three would also act as the most thoughtful and unique gift idea for holiday hostesses, in lieu of the poinsettias, fresh bouquets, or bottles of wine typically gifted this time of year. Just tie a big bow around the neck of the bulbs (or the box) and voilà

For all of us looking for one fewer thing to worry about, these amaryllis bulbs are a testament that developing a green thumb isn’t only possible, but it’s also a surprisingly easy feat. Run, don’t walk, to get your hands on an amaryllis three-pack and spread some holiday cheer!
