7 Tiny Changes That Made My Kitchen Look Like I Did a Full Renovation
A few months ago, my husband and I finally tackled one of the biggest home upgrades on our to-do list: the kitchen. Admittedly, our budget was very tight. The whole project actually started with a promise to my husband that I’d only repaint the cabinets because I couldn’t stand looking at their dark color and shoddy paint job anymore (five-years-ago me really thought I could pull off black kitchen cabinets).
If you’ve ever tackled a room makeover or a full renovation without hiring professionals, you know just doing one project is hard. My DIY kitchen cabinet upgrade quickly morphed into wanting to replace my counters, refinish my floors, and change the backsplash — alongside giving the walls a fresh coat of paint, too. I kept costs down where I could by choosing affordable materials, like laminate countertops, and tackling small upgrades with my husband, but the project still grew beyond what I had budgeted for.
The Small (and Affordable!) Decor Details That Made a Huge Difference
Those bigger changes certainly made a difference in my kitchen — but I’ve been surprised by how much the little things have changed the way I feel about this space, too. Once the dust settled, the smaller decor swaps really made my kitchen feel polished. New curtains softened the windows, a few strategically placed shelves gave me spots to display things I love, and a mix of plants, collected pieces, and everyday items added the warmth and personality that was missing before.
It’s been a good reminder that you don’t always need a huge renovation budget to make a space feel fresh and put together. Sometimes, it’s the smallest changes that have the biggest impact. If you’re looking to refresh your kitchen without investing in a major renovation, this list of tiny, affordable decor hacks helped to transform my kitchen in a surprisingly big way.
Picture Frame Shelves
Adding thin picture-frame shelves to the old chimney beside the oven was one of the first decor projects I tackled. Because we needed the shelves to be a very specific width, I asked a carpenter friend to custom-make them for my space. Then I stained them a warm walnut shade before adding the most beautiful brass gallery rails I found on Etsy.
This was one of the pricier decor swaps we made, as the brass gallery rails for the shelves came in just below $100. However, it’s also one of my favorites, and I found sourcing the gallery rails on Etsy was the most affordable option. Plus, I supported a small local business in the process. It’s a win-win!
Cabinet Hardware
Painting the cabinets undoubtedly transformed the look of the kitchen, but swapping out the hardware made an equally noticeable difference. I replaced the basic brushed nickel handles on both the upper and lower cabinets with knobs on top and pulls on the bottom. The mixed hardware adds a little more visual interest while also giving the kitchen a warmer, slightly more rustic feel that I love.
I found the circular knobs at The Home Depot and sourced bin pulls from Amazon, making this one of the easiest and most affordable swaps of the renovation. It’s a small detail, but changing the hardware helped give the freshly painted cabinets a more finished, intentional look without requiring another major investment.
Cafe Curtains
Cafe curtains are still enjoying their time in the style spotlight after becoming popular in the early 2020s, and I’m so glad I hopped on this stunning decor trend. Adding cafe curtains to the window behind the kitchen sink softened the space and added some much-needed privacy to my bungalow kitchen.
I love that I can swap the curtains out to suit the season, and they were so affordable to install. I grabbed two sets of cafe curtains from Amazon and sourced the small cafe curtain rod from The Home Depot, and both we’re under $20. Simply obsessed!
Potted Plants and Herbs
I’m a huge plant lover, so the fact that I hadn’t created a space for kitchen houseplants until now was practically an act of treason. I added a potted basil plant to a counter beside the sink, while the shelves on either side of the window have become the perfect home for small propagation vases filled with my cuttings.
Right now, I have pothos, hoya, and philodendron cuttings rooting in mini glass vases, and they bring so much color and life into the space. It’s a small addition, but having greenery right at the sink makes the kitchen feel so much more like me.
Decorative Window Film
Because I live in a ground-floor bungalow, I regularly use window film for privacy in bedrooms and the bathroom. But in the kitchen, I decided to use it for a different purpose: hiding clutter. The mudroom opens directly off the kitchen, and because it was added onto the original house, there’s an old window connecting the two spaces. The mudroom has become a drop zone for all kinds of household and outdoor items, meaning clutter was always visible from the kitchen, which irked me to no end.
Adding decorative window film to the bottom half of the window has made a surprisingly huge difference. It obscures the mess without blocking light or making the two spaces feel completely closed off. It’s one of the simplest changes I made during the renovation, but it’s also had one of the biggest impacts on how tidy the kitchen feels.
Collected Vintage Decor
Scouring thrift stores and antique markets for unique, vintage home decor is my dream activity. So incorporating some of my thrifted finds was a must when decorating the kitchen. Until this point, I’d avoided non-functional decor in this space (and if I’m honest, I’m not really sure why). While functional pices truly offer the best of both worlds, there’s something freeing about decorating without worrying too much about whether an item is useful, aside from the joy it brings me!
I nestled a lot of this vintage charm on those picture frame shelves as well as on the mini shelves on either side of my kitchen sink. A few of my favorite items include a few Delft pieces (a nod to my Dutch heritage!), a vintage wood butter mold I found at the antique market, hanging brass utensils, and an early print of a Julia Child cookbook.
A Whimsical Window Bird Feeder
Last but certainly not least, I added a window bird feeder to our kitchen window. It’s quickly become my favorite addition in the space.
There’s nothing quite like enjoying my morning coffee at the kitchen island while watching chickadees, house finches, cardinals, and other songbirds stop by for a morning snack. Simple, affordable, and totally magical!
