We Tested 3 of the Most Popular Helix Mattresses — Here Are Our Honest Thoughts
You might think of yourself as being an easygoing person, but there’s nothing quite like mattress shopping to make you realize just how particular you are. Mattress brands don’t make it easy for us, though — to make an informed decision, you have to take into account all sorts of considerations, like your preferred sleep position, firmness level, temperature, and material type. To make it easier on yourself, consider shopping at Helix, which sells 25 mattresses for every type of sleeper and offers a quiz to match you with your perfect bed.
We tested three of Helix’s bestsellers as part of our Personal Shopper series, where we send our editors to the storefronts of top retailers to test specific product categories. In this edition, we touched, lied down on, and thoroughly examined Helix’s mattresses to determine our top picks. Read on for all of our thoughts and observations, including notes on the most luxurious mattresses we’ve tested.
Why Helix?
Helix offers one of the most customizable mattress shopping experiences around, thanks to its thorough sleep quiz, which asks specific questions to match you with your ideal mattress. The brand offers 25 mattresses total across three collections (Core, Luxe, and Elite), so the quiz makes it a lot easier to sift through all the options. In addition to more traditional mattresses, Helix sells a Plus mattress for plus-size shoppers and a double-sided mattress for kids. Helix launched Birch, a sleep brand focused on sustainability and natural materials, in 2019.
Helix also sells a nice variety of mattress toppers and protectors (two of which we’ve tested and written about: the ErgoAlign Topper and Memory Foam Topper). You can also buy sheets, pillows, and bed frames to easily outfit your entire bedroom. If you buy a mattress or topper, you can take advantage of the 100-night trial period — and you can rest easy knowing your mattress is protected by a limited lifetime warranty.
The Criteria
We judged every Helix mattress based on the following criteria:
- Feel: Is the mattress firm, soft, or somewhere in between? Does it have extra cushioning? Is it comfortable no matter the sleep position?
- Support: Does the mattress effectively cradle pressure points? Does it feel comfortable to lie on?
- Materials: What is the mattress made from? Is it a hybrid mattress? Does it have cooling properties?
- Safety: Do the materials in the mattress have any certifications?
Why You Should Trust Me as a Tester
Each Helix mattress in this article was tested by style editor Emma Dangel. Emma started out on the marketing & brand partnerships team at Apartment Therapy in 2022, and transitioned over to the editorial team in 2025. She mainly covers decor news, style guides, and shopping tips, and has also worked on Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool NYC event and the New/Next List.
To write about these mattresses, Emma traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to check out Helix’s mattresses in person. She was able to touch, lie on, and closely examine all of the brand’s offerings, plus got to see exactly what’s in each mattress.
Our Favorite Editor-Tested Mattresses at Helix
What we love
- Cooling and plush Tencel cover
- Lots of customizations available
Good to know
- Feel is a bit firmer than advertised
Emma’s thoughts: The Midnight Luxe is one of Helix’s most popular models for its medium feel, excellent support, and approachable price, and I do think it offers a lot of value for most mattress shoppers. Like the Midnight Elite, it has a medium feel that’s designed with side sleepers in mind, although I found it to have more of a medium-firm feel that was honestly a bit too firm for me. Still, the pillow-top layer gives it some extra plushness.
The Midnight Luxe comes with six layers, including multiple foam layers that provide different functions. You can also opt for two optional layers: a CoolForce layer that helps with temperature regulation, and an ErgoAlign Contour layer that sits under the hips for added lower back support and pain relief. It has excellent motion isolation and edge support, which makes it a good choice for people who toss and turn while they sleep.
I was actually able to sleep on this mattress overnight, and got to experience its cooling properties firsthand. I was sleeping in an Arizona hotel room with a finicky air conditioning unit, and was worried I would be too hot (especially because I prefer my bedroom to basically be freezing). Thankfully, the Midnight Luxe actually kept me comfortable in the heat.
The cover is made with Tencel, a naturally breathable material that helps with temperature regulation, but you can also opt for Helix’s popular GlacioTex cover for an extra fee and even better cooling properties. Plus, the top foam layer is made of copper gel memory foam, which is much more naturally cooling than typical memory foam. If you’re a hot sleeper and like a medium-firm feel, then this is the mattress for you.
Specifications:
- Type: Hybrid foam

- Height: 13.5 inches
- Firmness: Medium
What we love
- Excellent edge support and motion isolation
- Plush cooling cover
Good to know
- Firmer than expected
Emma’s thoughts: The Midnight Elite offers a more luxurious, detail-oriented experience compared to the Midnight Luxe. It features both microcoil and standard coil layers, plus multiple layers of memory foam, including an ultra-high density foam for extra-deep contouring and pressure relief. While it’s advertised as having a medium firmness level, I thought it was definitely on the firm end — in fact, it was a little firmer than I’d like.
Still, there’s no denying how luxe this mattress is. I loved the zoned microcoil layer, which added a layer of support and extra motion isolation that couples will love. My favorite feature was the plush GlacioTex cover, which has a quilted design that feels amazing to lie down on, and cooling fibers that keep you at a good temperature through the night. Although it’s slightly firmer and less bouncy than I prefer, I think it’s an excellent choice for shoppers seeking a foam-forward hybrid mattress.
Specifications:
- Type: Hybrid foam
- Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
- Height: 15 inches
- Firmness: Medium
What we love
- Three memory foam layers for excellent pressure relief
- Firmness offset a bit by plush cover
Good to know
- Firm feel might not be to everyone’s liking
Emma’s thoughts: If you really want luxury, though, the Twilight Elite is where it’s at. It’s similar to the Midnight Elite, except for a few key differences — namely, it’s much firmer and has an extra layer. While it has the same double coil layers (one of microcoils, and one of standard coils), it has an extra layer of responsive memory foam that’s designed specifically for those who prefer a firmer feel. On the other hand, it comes with the same quilted GlacioTex cover for extra contouring and pressure relief.
The result is a mattress that has very little bounce, the strongest edge support I’ve seen, and excellent motion isolation. I typically prefer a medium-firm mattress, so I didn’t think I would like this one, but I actually think that I would sleep pretty well on it. The extra memory foam layer and double coil layers really make it stand out, and I love how cushioned and cooling the top layer feels. For anyone who likes a firm mattress and is OK with paying a little extra, the Twilight Elite checks all the boxes.
