IKEA Is Selling an Incredibly Comfortable Sectional That’s Totally Kid- and Pet-Proof
A sectional is a furniture piece that I’ve never imagined or considered myself owning, especially in the small New York City apartments I’ve lived in throughout the years. These expansive couches not only feel substantial, but they also feel distinctly adult. While I’m not there yet (I’m still shoving six friends on a little sofa), a girl can dream, right? And when I saw the sectional in a family of five’s 750-square-foot Manhattan apartment, my jaw dropped.
Sarah and Peterson Almodovar are small-space experts. The apartment they shared was the home where Peterson grew up, and Sarah moved in nine years ago. Now they share it with their three young children. While they’ve had some time to feel out (and renovate) the space, it’s still a small footprint to work with. But a sectional was on their wish list. Enter: IKEA’s KIVIK sectional.
What is special about the IKEA KIVIK sectional?
This large furniture piece, which spans around 8 feet on both sides (right W 101 1/8″ x left W 101 1/8″ x D 37 3/8″ x H 32 5/8″), just so happens to be the family’s favorite item in their home.
“Not only is it comfortable and welcoming, but it also feels so satisfying to sit on the couch and get a good view of the main area of the apartment and realize this is the space we’ve built ourselves and we’re so thankful for our home,” Sarah said at the time of the House Tour.
The couch is so renowned that people have said it’s more comfortable than a bed, and the line, which comes in different sizes, features some seating options with pull-out beds. This sectional in the series comes in 13 colors, ranging from light green to beige, and features washable covers made from a blend of recycled polyester and cotton, which makes it perfect for homes with young kids.
It looks like the comfiest place to gather, and the sectional’s description says that the deep seat cushions are made of pocket springs and high-resilience foam. Sitting on IKEA’s KIVIK sectional sounds so plush; I’m not surprised that Sarah and her family chose to sacrifice limited floor space for the large furniture item. Unsurprisingly, too, her family isn’t the only one who loves this couch.
“We have had this sofa for over 7 years with kids and pets! We are remodeling our living room and are trying to decide if we should recover it or buy a new sectional to match our update,” one reviewer on IKEA’s website said. “The frame and cushioning are fine, but the kids have been very rough on it, so a new cover is a must for us.”
Another reviewer from IKEA’s website noted, “I’ve had this sectional sofa for 5 years and it continues to be a comfortable place to lounge and sleep. It’s stood up to 2 young kids jumping on it daily. I love the washable cover; I just washed the cushion covers and after putting it all back together, the couch looks fresh and new. The low, wide arm rests are surprisingly useful and comfortable. I keep debating replacing the couch for aesthetic reasons, but can’t part with it just yet because it continues to be excellent.”
There’s another bonus of the couch: affordability. The IKEA KIVIK sectional (depending on what color you choose) costs $1,199 for IKEA Family members and $1,399 for regular shoppers. However, if you’re looking at a similar option, like this one from Wayfair, it can cost almost double at $3,099.
If IKEA’s KIVIK sectional isn’t available for delivery near you or it’s sold out at your local store, consider this sectional from Wayfair that has a similar price tag and dimensions (26.4” H X 90.9” W X 33.9” D). It comes in two colors and has a bouclé fabric.
The IKEA KIVIK sectional turns out to be the perfect gathering place for families who live in big or small homes. If you want to get a lot of bang for your buck, I’d consider this gorgeous piece.
