Recently I was browsing West Elm’s new collaboration with Los Angeles-based design duo Pierce & Ward. It made me think about how whenever I have to buy something, whether it’s a dress for a special occasion or a new piece of furniture to replace an old stoop find, I never see anything good. On the flip side, when I’m trying to save money, all of my favorite retailers decide to drop the most beautiful collections. Honestly, though, if I like something enough I’ll usually buy it anyway.

When Apartment Therapy covered the West Elm x Pierce & Ward launch a few weeks ago, I found myself wondering if there was anything in my home that could be swapped out, just so I’d have a valid excuse to shop the line. I was especially enamored of the collection’s lacquered nightstand. It’s perfect for small spaces like my apartment, and it looks so retro in the best possible way.

What Is the Pierce & Ward Lacquered Nightstand?

The collaboration as a whole looks very vintage-inspired, and something I noticed about many of the pieces is that they have cool curves, whether it’s a dining chair with a swooping back or a bed frame with a curved, cushy headboard. This nightstand fits right in with the other furnishings, thanks to its rounded corners, which simultaneously make it look less harsh and give it a charming ’70s aesthetic.

The nightstand is contract grade, which means it’s designed for commercial use, so it’ll hold up even better in a home long-term. It’s mostly made of solid poplar wood, although its top and drawer fronts are made of engineered wood. Everything is covered in a high-gloss gold finish.

Another thing that appealed to me was this product’s small footprint. I looked at all of the nightstands at my local West Elm not too long ago, and most of them were large, if not oversized. The average length across was easily more than 20 inches, while the width from front to back was more than 17 inches for most models. The lacquered nightstand, however, measures just 18 inches long and 16 inches wide, which makes it perfect for small bedrooms.

Why You’ll Love the Pierce & Ward Lacquered Nightstand

It’s cool that this nightstand has design characteristics that make it stand out, but overall it isn’t too flashy. For example, its gold finish is muted, but it’s still unique compared to a basic brown or white wood finish. I also love the short, recessed platform base. It gives the design a funky look and adds to the overall retro appearance.

Despite its small size, this product also offers decent storage space in the form of three drawers, which measure 13 inches deep and 8.5 inches wide. You could easily cozy the nightstand up next to your bed and keep all of your essentials easily accessible without blocking your bedroom door. The brown knobs pop nicely against the gold and help maintain that earthy ’70s color scheme.

You can shop this pick individually or in a set of two, but no matter which option you go with, you’ll want to do it soon. The Pierce & Ward collection is limited-edition, so this might just be one of those instances when you let your impulsive shopping tendencies take over.
