Fiddle-leaf figs have long reigned as the most popular houseplant. Even today’s rising stars like the monstera and Ficus Audrey are called “the next fiddle-leaf figs,” and no one knows if the hype will ever truly die down. But Hilton Carter aka Apartment Therapy’s Plant Doctor predicts the next “it” plant is here to stay for the next three years, and its name is the Philodendron Birkin.

In his new plant collection with Target that hits shelves on May 14, Carter included live plants that can thrive in low-lighting as well as faux versions that don’t need any care at all. And out of the curated bunch, he identified the Philodendron Birkin as the next designer plant that everyone should watch out for.

“I love the Birkin because I believe it’s the designer plant of 2021, 2022, [and] I’m going to push 2023,” Carter told Apartment Therapy. “I believe the Birkin is going to take over that spot where it’s going to get its own hashtag.” And it’s true that last year, the houseplant was starting to grab some attention on social media, so this prediction seems on track with what was already circulating among plant aficionados.

Taking care of a Birkin is very much the same as tending to other Philodendron species. The houseplant does best in bright, indirect light, and it will thrive in humid conditions (keep that spray bottle nearby for frequent misting). Water your plant when the soil dries an inch from the surface, and take note that philodendron are considered toxic to dogs and cats.

You can buy a live Philodendron Birkin on Bloomscape, or there’s always Carter’s faux version that’s by far the easiest to take of (for obvious reasons). Get your hands on this plant while you can — if Carter’s prediction comes true, this gem might not be on shelves and available online for much longer.
