Cluttered drawer filled with hair care products, a hair straightener, brushes, and various hair accessories.

The drawer by my bathroom sink is home to all my personal items, and over time it’s become a complete mess. It’s so easy to just toss things in there and let them pile up, turning that drawer into a cluttered catch-all. Some days I could find what I needed easily; other days, not so much. I knew it was time for some help to get this space in my bathroom organized.

Enter Malaika Lubega, professional organizer and owner of Huza Home Harmony. I invited her to help me transform my unruly bathroom drawer. Here’s everything we did.

Take everything out and declutter.

“Take everything out,” Lubega says. “Sort through, determine what’s staying and then get rid of the items you don’t need, love, or use.” When I laid out my stash, I was surprised it wasn’t as overwhelming as I feared. But there was definitely plenty to move or toss. Expired medications, broken hair ties, and makeup untouched for years all had to go. Clearing out duplicates and old products instantly lightened the load.

Move items elsewhere.

Seeing everything on display made it obvious that not all items belonged in this drawer. I decided to dedicate the drawer to hair tools and accessories, and relocate the rest. Travel-size toiletries found a new home in my suitcase’s travel kit. Nail clippers and manicure tools were bundled into a cosmetics bag reserved for at-home mani sessions. Larger items like deodorant and skincare products were moved to an acrylic wall shelf nearby. This freed up the drawer for what truly belonged.

Group and categorize.

With the clutter cleared, Lubega reminded me that “even though it’s a small drawer, it’s important to categorize like items.” She suggested clear drawer organizers to keep everything neat and easy to find. Since this drawer was now my haircare zone, I grouped hair ties, brushes, claw clips, and my heatless curler. A few small essentials — eyebrow tweezers, brow scissors, extra nail clippers, and pimple patches — also found a spot here because of convenience. Clear drawer organizers proved perfect for corralling small items and preventing chaos from creeping back.

Reorganize like a pro.

This part always feels like a game of Tetris. Once sorted, it was time to place everything back. I secured the organizer trays inside the drawer with museum gel to prevent sliding. My heatless curler didn’t fit in any tray perfectly, so I tucked it to the side. Hair brushes went at the top where they’re easy to grab. The result? I can see everything at a glance — no more digging around for a hair tie or clip. My daily routine just got way easier.

Enjoy and maintain a clean space.

Bathroom clutter can sneak up on you fast! But once I purged expired or unused items, organizing felt effortless. This experience inspired me to do monthly check-ins to keep expiration dates in check. An organized bathroom isn’t just about looks — it’s about feeling calm and in control, which sets a positive tone for the day. If your bathroom storage feels overwhelming, I highly recommend giving it a refresh. You’ll be surprised how much better you feel once it’s done.
