The “It” Color You’ll Keep Seeing Everywhere in 2024
Two years ago, sage green started popping up everywhere. No less than six (!) paint companies picked a shade of it as their color of the year for 2022, and in the years since, green has remained a favorite shade for all over the home — especially on kitchen cabinets.
So I wasn’t surprised when I saw sage green pop up in multiple rooms in Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool event, which was held in October. What’s amazing is that the fresh shade still feels exciting after years of being popular, and the designers who created rooms for the event found unique ways to incorporate it into their small-space rooms. Different shades of it popped up all over the event, but I had two favorite uses of it.
Stepping inside Anita Yokota’s “Off-Beat and Beautiful” bedroom felt like a breath of fresh air — and honestly, I think it’s because she painted the wainscoting in Clare Paint’s “All the Sage.” Cool colors like sage can have a calming effect, and Yokota’s choice of accessories really amped up the chill factor. I love the sage green Target blanket she draped across the bed, and that she contrasted those greens with a soft blue Tuft & Needle dog bed and a comfy-looking Tuft & Needle duvet that still makes me want to curl up and take a nap whenever I see it.
The relaxing vibes of sage feel right at home in a bedroom, but in a kitchen? If it’s not on cabinets? Now that feels new. Drew Barrymore designed a studio space with a kitchen and living area for her “Sunny Style” room and included a stunning sage green-colored chair (from her home line, Beautiful by Drew Barrymore!) and a luxe-looking sage chenille blanket also by her line, but it’s the kitchenware that really caught my eye. The Beautiful All-in-One 4-Quart Hero Pan in sage green immediately got my attention, as did the mixing bowls. They’re such small accents, but the unusual shade helped them pop against the other creams and woods in the kitchen.
If you prefer a darker green, you’ll love the couch in Dala Al-Fuwaires’ “Soulful Space” and the accent wall in Carmen René Smith’s “Parisian Pastiche” design, as well as exciting pops of color in every other room. And before you worry that sage green has reached its peak popularity and will look passé if you put it in your home, fear not: Shades of green are still popping up as colors of the year, and look timeless and modern in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and more.
