I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say there are certain foods I enjoy, but I can only eat them every once in a while. Either they take too much effort to cook regularly, or the mere act of eating them is too big a hassle. Mexican street corn, or elote, is one of those foods. It’s a delicious, summertime side, and it’s relatively easy to find here in New York City, whether I’m eating at a Mexican restaurant or from a food truck. Even still, I tend to avoid it because it can be messy to consume, and the kernels from the cob tend to get stuck in my teeth. Simply put, I don’t want to deal with that — especially if I’m out and about.

A couple of months ago, though, I heard about Savory Spice’s Mexican Street Corn Seasoning. It seemed like the perfect way to enjoy the zesty, summery flavor of elote without the chaos of eating corn on the cob. It turned out to be the one pantry staple missing from my spice cabinet — and you’ll probably want to add it to yours too.

What Is Savory Spice’s Mexican Street Corn Seasoning?

Savory Spice describes its street corn seasoning as “lime-forward.” Although it has hints of lime, I wouldn’t say that’s the dominant flavor. (If, like me, you’re not a major lime-lover, I think you’ll appreciate this.) To me, this blend tastes similar to taco seasoning, only lighter and more vibrant. It’s perfectly salty and just spicy enough, and it has that slightly sweet aftertaste that makes elote so widely loved. You can, of course, use the seasoning on corn, but there’s really no limit to the types of dishes you can sprinkle it on. I find myself reaching for it multiple times a week, whether I’m stirring it into rice, patting it onto fried eggs, or using it to give salsa or baked potatoes an extra flavor boost. If you’re a fan of weekly taco nights, that’s another great opportunity to use this product. The spice blend might seem a tad pricey at $12 per 3.75-ounce jar, but I think the amount you get is worth it. Even if you use the seasoning every day, the container is big enough that you won’t run out fast.

Why I Love Savory Spice’s Mexican Street Corn Seasoning

Mexican food is my favorite, so I eat it year-round. But I especially love the cuisine’s spicy, well-rounded flavors in the summer, so that’s a big reason why I’ve been gravitating toward the Mexican street corn blend all season. As I mentioned, you can use it on just about any savory dish or even as a marinade for grilling.

“I’ve used this seasoning twice since I got it last week,” one reviewer wrote. “Once on pan-seared chicken breasts and once on grilled halibut. Both times, the food had tons of interesting, fun flavor. I have a heavy hand, and it’s delightful. I’ll be buying this in bulk!”

I agree that even if you accidentally use a little bit too much of the seasoning, it won’t make your meal too salty or spicy. In other words, you don’t have to be cautious when sprinkling. What’s more, I’m a lazy cook, so I love a one-and-done spice blend that saves me the time of having to measure out and individually add a number of different spices to my recipe. With this seasoning, I save time and effort and still end up with perfectly flavorful results.

If you’re a fan of elote or merely want a versatile seasoning blend that’ll take homemade meals to the next level, give this one a try. I promise you’ll love it long after summer has ended, too.
