The Stackable Dresser That Freed Up So Much Space in My Small Bedroom (Totally Worth the Splurge!)
Like many who move into their first apartment, I had a lot of hand-me-down furniture. Some pieces still had a lot of life in them while others were on their last legs. My bedroom dresser fell into the latter category: It was a black-and-brown, six-drawer beast with a waterfall silhouette that was likely made in the ’80s or ’90s. While it offered a lot of space (it was taller than me!), it took a team of people to move. To make matters worse, not only was the dresser huge, it was also falling apart inside and out. In fact, I ended up having to remove the bottom drawer because it was so severely broken.
For a replacement, I knew that I wanted to get a smaller dresser that could fit inside my walk-in closet which I loved. I began shopping around for compact options at other retailers, but when editor-favorite brand Thuma offered me an opportunity to try out The Dresser, I immediately jumped at the chance. After giving it a shot, I have no regrets.
A Quick Look at The Dresser
- Minimal and modular soft-close drawer system

Design Features That Stand Out
The genius in The Dresser from Thuma is found in all the little details. For starters, the furniture piece itself is made from repurposed wood and has a neutral wood grain finish that fits any home aesthetic. Next, the drawers arrive fully assembled and are packed individually with easy-to-follow instructions for setup. Each 30x15x5-inch soft-close drawer also has integrated handles to make carrying and stacking less of a burden. The Dresser has a modular design in which each drawer stacks together and locks in place with the included large screws that are tightened by hand. Once all the drawers are nested, the dresser’s finishing touch is a 33×18.3×1.1-inch tray top that covers everything inside and provides substantial space for a lamp, books, smaller storage pieces, or anything else you’d like on display. Overall, it’s a sleek and minimal wood furniture piece with no metal parts in view.
How It Performed
When I received the 4×1 configuration of The Dresser, I was living in an upstairs apartment. Furniture deliveries were always stressful because I was never 100% sure how much of a hassle they would be. However, getting The Dresser was a breeze in comparison to other items. That’s not to say that the drawers don’t have some weight to them, but because they’re packaged separately, getting them upstairs didn’t involve a lot of measuring and hoping for the best. Plus, once all of the boxes were in my apartment, all I had to do was unpack each one and start stacking them where I’d made room for the new furniture. As each drawer was placed, I tightened each screw at the back of it. The tray top nestled into the top drawer, and then I was done! After putting together so much of my home furniture, setting up The Dresser couldn’t have been an easier process.
Wanting to save some space in the main part of my bedroom, I placed The Dresser in my walk-in closet, and it worked perfectly beneath my closet organizers. It also made my closet look fancier overall. All I was missing was a mirror and a cushy bench. The Dresser stored all of my everyday clothing, and I couldn’t have been happier with the result. Plus, when it was time for me to move, it didn’t take a lot of extra effort. Sure, I had to get help carrying each drawer down the stairs, but I loved that I could unscrew each drawer to separate them before loading them onto the moving truck. Now, The Dresser isn’t tucked away in a closet, and it still looks fabulous with all of the drawers functioning properly. I know this is one I’m going to keep for as long as possible!
What I Loved
- Interior handles: The integrated handles are a game-changer on this dresser. It makes the furniture piece incredibly renter-friendly and increases the convenience of its portability.
- Stackable design: A dresser that’s made up of stacked drawers gets major points for thoughtfulness. It’s weighty but not difficult to move (for those tasked with doing so), so you won’t feel like you have to get rid of it if you change your home base.
- Compatible with other Thuma collections: In addition to The Dresser, Thuma gave me the opportunity to try out The Credenza, which has a combination of drawers and open shelves for additional storage. The Credenza has comparable finishes to The Dresser and also offers a variety of configurations so you can mix and match your furniture pieces around your home or in the same room. For instance, my Thuma dresser and credenza are placed side by side in my bedroom!
Good to Know
For safety and stability, The Dresser should not be stacked more than five drawers high or 47 inches tall.
