If your bedroom doesn’t have ample storage, sometimes you have to create it yourself — whether that’s with under-bed bins, clothing racks, or IKEA closet hacks. When Yvonne Langen (@tasteandtipple) moved into her 1940s Ontario home a couple of years ago, “the primary bedroom originally had a very narrow galley-style closet that was dark and awkward.”

Yvonne and her husband, Michael Rizk, “not one[s] to shy away from a renovation project,” tore out the wall separating the old closet from the bedroom, borrowed space from a linen closet in the adjoining hallway to make their bedroom bigger, and then added a beautified IKEA PAX system for their storage needs.

First, the walls got a fresh coat of paint and a dose of drama.

The creamy white paint color on the walls is Benjamin Moore’s Cloud Nine, and the wall behind the headboard sports a mural wallpaper, Anthropologie’s Etched Arcadia Mural. This isn’t the only wallpaper mural Yvonne has in her home, and she calls wallpaper one of the best ways to go bold in a space.

There’s also some pattern, texture, and color added through the linen duvet cover, the gold pillows, and the new rug.

An IKEA PAX hack added ample storage.

The real color pop in the bedroom, however, comes through the teal IKEA PAX system; it’s painted Benjamin Moore’s Willow Grove. (Fun fact: The closet is color-matched to Yvonne and Michael’s bedside lamps!)

Yvonne and Michael found an IKEA PAX wardrobe on Facebook Marketplace and added it to the corner of their bedroom to create the look of built-in closets. And they got creative when it came to the doors, as they both wanted something a little fancier than the doors the IKEA website offers.

“I had found custom PAX doors on Pinterest from a European company called Plum Living and fell in love with the look,” Yvonne says.  “Sadly they don’t ship to Canada, and their doors were out of our budget.”

Not to worry, though: Michael created similar doors (all five for about $615) using MDF sheets, hardboard, cane webbing (to complement their woven nightstand fronts), paint, and brass hardware. Yvonne says it’s her favorite DIY project in the house.

“The project took about 20 hours in total to complete,” she says. And now her bedroom looks totally complete and totally custom. For another neat bedroom IKEA PAX hack, check out this serene sage green space.
