The new year is full of possibilities, and I think there’s no better place to start than in your own home. Like me, you might also be feeling newly energized to tackle your to-do list — and fortunately, winter is the perfect time to hunker down indoors with a project.

A new year also means new IKEA products, and there are some real winners in the retailer’s lineup at the start of 2025. While they’re all worth snagging, a few in particular are totally prime for hacking — a DIYer’s dream! Below, check out six standout IKEA products that are totally hackable, plus ideas for how you can make them your own.

At $5.99, the PERSILLADE plant pot is already a steal — especially considering the luxe-looking texture and goes-with-anything neutral cream color. But if you want to add a little bit of spice, this pot is a great place to experiment with spray paint.

Hack It: Grab a can of spray paint in the color of your choice and get to painting. You can use tape to create cheeky stripes, cover half of the pot to produce a color-dipped effect, or even give the cream-colored pot the look of natural stone by spraying it with a textured stone-like spray paint as seen in the IKEA metal side table hack shown above.

The new KLAVRESTRÖM, a minimalist wood wall shelf, can bring much-needed storage everywhere from above a bathroom vanity to beside a kitchen stove. Because it’s made of solid oak, it’s both paintable and stainable — you’ll just need to remove the clear acrylic lacquer first.

Hack It: If you want an easier project, though, you can make your solid oak look like trendy burl wood for a song. Grab a roll of burl wood contact paper — under $20 online — and use it to turn your minimalist wood shelf into a maximalist fantasy. Learn more about the burl wood inspiration DIY here.

IKEA is no stranger to stylish, affordable lighting (see: the VARMBLIXT donut lamp that was everywhere in 2024), but this might be the cheapest light shade the retailer has ever offered — despite feeling “more expensive than it is,” as one reviewer notes. Because it’s made out of cardboard, you have a lot of options for customizing it to fit your own home.

Hack It: Think beyond paint and instead try decoupaging your pendant shade with a favorite pattern. While you can use wallpaper or fabric for this job, you can also get a fun look with minimal investment by using paper cocktail napkins, as in the mirror decoupage project shown here.

Small spaces need small furniture — and even better if that furniture can serve multiple purposes. The TONSTAD desk is just under 30 inches wide, making it easy to squeeze into tight spots, and it would make just as good a table as it does a desk.

Hack It: To make this already practical furniture even more functional, consider adding casters to the feet. This done-in-no-time $20 update can make it easier to tuck a desk away when the work day’s over (perfect in a studio) or can give you the option to roll this work surface between living room, bedroom, and kitchen as needed.

The TONSTAD line also features a sleek coffee table with a minimalist style that can fit a range of decor types. Its expansive surface makes it a perfect candidate for any decorative tabletop upgrades you can dream up.

Hack It: For an easy beginner hack, try contact paper in a stone or even burl wood pattern. For a next-level redo, reach for ceramic tiles in your favorite color to cover the table top (like the brilliant desk DIY shown here). Bonus to this project? You’ll never need to use a coaster.

Another TONSTAD product coming in hot! This cabinet, with its sophisticated sliding glass doors, can be used to store anything from linens to dishes to books.

Hack It: Clear glass doors are the ideal way to showcase a gorgeous wallpaper pattern. Keep the outside white to let the wallpaper be the star, or take a page from this hutch redo and give the frame a zippy new paint job, too. (You’ll just need to make sure you’re following the best practices for painting IKEA furniture.)
