Meghan Markle Has So Many Uses for This Tried-and-True Storage Gem (Starting at $20!)
In her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, shares a glimpse into how she spends her time at home — whether she’s setting up a garden party with Mindy Kaling or harvesting honey from her own beehive. Meghan dishes out tips and tricks throughout all eight episodes, showing viewers everything from how she prepares her guest room to how she makes a flower arrangement.
I tried my hardest to retain all of her nuggets of homemaking wisdom, but I found myself a little distracted by the gorgeous backdrop more than once. The show takes place at an 8-million-dollor farmhouse a few miles from her own home in Montecito, California. (Meghan wanted to “protect that safe haven,” which she shares with Prince Harry and their two kids, according to PEOPLE.) Still, it’s decorated to the nines, and I noticed that one of Apartment Therapy’s favorite storage gems kept popping up: wicker baskets.
Meghan finds a number of uses for the editor-loved storage solution. As she wanders through her garden, which is one of the few peeks at her own property, she totes around a gorgeous basket, filling it with produce to bring back to her kitchen. She makes a harvest basket for one of her friends, arranging homegrown fruits and veggies inside of it. When prepping for her garden party, she even keeps deflated balloons in another basket on her kitchen countertop. (For context: She was building a balloon arch.)
It appears Meghan really appreciates the versatility of wicker baskets. And if you want to follow in her footsteps, I found a look-alike for the shallower basket that she uses for harvesting: McGee & Co.’s Rattan Gardening Tray. It would look beautiful on your kitchen countertop or your coffee table, and it would instantly give your space an organic and natural vibe.
I also love this uniquely shaped gathering basket from Amazon. However, if you’re after a more budget-friendly alternative and not as concerned about getting a near-replica of Meghan’s, then Amazon also has a popular option that comes with a removable lace-trimmed liner. A few shoppers note that they rely on it for harvesting their gardens, with one saying that the liner helps a ton with keeping things clean.
When Meghan goes into her pristine pantry in the first episode, I spotted another wicker accent. On one shelf, she uses two slanted baskets to corral some Mason jars and bottles. (I’ve used similar baskets for organizing papers and folders on my desk.) Amazon has what appears to be an almost-perfect match for Meghan’s in the form of this $35 two-pack from StorageWorks.
Beyond the kitchen, there are plenty of other ways to add the Meghan-approved look to your space. We’ve used wicker baskets as stylish containers for extra blankets, pillows, bed linens, and towels. West Elm has a ton of options that you can use for any of those purposes, if you’re ready to invest in a basket that’ll last for years. (It’ll never go out of style, either!)
On the more affordable side, Walmart’s $24 Hyacinth Boat Basket is also a solid bet, according to hundreds of shoppers. “The weave is nice and tight, and I believe will hold up quite well,” says one of over 1,000 five-star reviews. I’m tempted to copy another shopper and swap out my plastic laundry basket for this chic alternative.
Needless to say, my AT teammates and I were already wicker basket devotees — how could we not be fans of such a beautiful decluttering solution? — but Meghan’s use of them in her new show has left us even more inspired.
