“Modern Folklore” Design Is the Nostalgic Trend You’re About to See in Homes Everywhere
If you ask me, the most timeless, chic homes sit right at the intersection of quirky and cozy. In recent years, countless trends and design aesthetics have emerged from somewhere within that spectrum. From cottagecore style and “coastal cowgirl” to Nancy Meyers-inspired interiors and Grandmacore, it seems the spaces that inspire warm, fuzzy feelings will never go out of style.
Finally, after so many iterations, it seems we might just have perfected that magic formula, and it’s a style Apartment Therapy is calling “Modern Folklore.” As part of Apartment Therapy’s 2026 New/Next List, I’ll take you through where this trend came from, what makes it a little different, and how to get the look for yourself at home.
What Is Modern Folklore?
“Modern Folklore” is a trend heavily inspired by heritage design traditions. With the United States having just marked its semiquincentennial earlier this month, a few familiar, Americana-inspired motifs are popping back up in interiors — but with a fresh twist. This new look is not overtly patriotic; rather, Modern Folklore is quieter, softer, and more quaint.
You won’t find any stars, stripes, or farmhouse vibes here (think: natural textures, neutral tones, and a pastel color palette, punctuated by pops of red instead — in other words, cottagecore with a side of Little House on the Prairie). Details like painted furniture with folk art-inspired floral borders, braided jute rugs, woven baskets, and sweet gingham fabrics help make any space feel more layered and lived-in.
How to Get the Modern Folklore Look
The emergence of this trend just might signal the start of a new, more idealistic era of American design. Modern Folklore rejects the mass-produced, mass-marketed, and overly polished, leaning instead into handcrafted details and personal touches. The end result? A soft, cozy, and idyllic home with an undeniable air of optimism and a lack of pretension.
