“Set-Jetting” Will Dominate Travel in 2023, According to Expedia

If you’re planning your next vacation, it’s worth taking inspiration from some of your favorite TV shows and movies. Entertainment-focused tourism is on the rise, with many people seeking out the spots that were featured in their latest binge-watch.

“Set-jetting” will be a huge deal in 2023, according to Expedia. Whether you’re dreaming of a “The Lord of the Rings“-inspired getaway in New Zealand, finding love in France like “Emily in Paris,” or living the Tanya McQuoid life in “The White Lotus“, television tourism is on a lot of people’s minds.

A recent survey from the travel giants found that streamed movies and TV shows are now the top sources of travel inspiration, with over two-thirds (68 percent) considering a trip to a certain destination after seeing it on television or in a movie. 61 percent of respondents said that they had booked a trip after being inspired by the location from one of their favorite shows.

“Set-jetting” destinations have overtaken social media recommendations for the first time ever, and are on par with those locations that may have been recommended by friends or family.

“The White Lotus” filmed at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea for its first season, and for its second which was set in Italy, the Emmy-nominated series shut down San Domenico Palace for filming of the second season from Jan. to Apr. this past year.

Elsewhere, many travelers are opting to head to the U.K. to immerse themselves in regal history thanks to the success of “The Crown” and “Bridgerton“, while New York remains an ever-popular destination among fans of iconic series like “Gossip Girl” and “Sex and the City” — two shows that have recently been rebooted.

Other travel trends for 2023 will include wellness vacations, cultural break, and a stripped-down approach to accommodation.
